hey guys... (well, girls)

I'm so sorry, i know this has come up a million times before and rather ignorantly it "didn't apply to me at the time" so i never read propperly. but now I'm trauling through past posts and am struggling to find what i'm looking for....

the IUD...

well, can't go back on the pill, obviously. im curently on the progesterone (sp?) only pill (or mini-pill) as its refered to in the UK. docs say its fine but tests are still 'inconclusive' as to links with DVT and well, basically, i don't wanna take the risk. and besides, i keep forgetting to take the bloody thing!!

so, am thinking of having an IUD fitted. but there is a choice isn't there... copper or mirena (sorry i can't remember the name, something like that...) which is safer/better? i think mirena releases progesterone hormones which are 'apparently safe' as deemed by the medical community, but im still not sure. ugggh i hate being on this pill. mine is called cerazette and ive ballooned about 10 pounds since i started taking it two months ago. nice!

any help would be appreciated. if people have posted good adivce on this topic before and can't be bothered to retype the advice, then please a link would be appreciated.

cheers,

Shyla x x x

" Hey Shyla, my doc said the copper IUD was better for my situation(no hormone risk). Mirena has the progesterone, so I imagine it'd be the same risks as the mini pill?

" I agree. My OB/GYN told me I could only have the copper one. He did warn me though that it can cause heavier bleeding and more cramps. "

" My OBGYN will not put a copper IUD in me while on warfarin because of the risk of bleeding. Did you guys have yours inserted while on warfarin?? If so, I'm JEALOUS. "

" I've heard of the copper one being better all-around for people who don't or can't be on the pill. So many women I know claim that any pill makes them "crazy," so they opt for the copper (non-hormonal) IUD. I'm told the down-side is "feeling like you're 14 again" (with heavy bleeding, cramps, etc.) ... but I'm seriously considering it myself since the pill just seems too risky for me at this point. Truth be told, I'll take those cramps, given the alternatives.

Dang, sorry about those extra 10 lbs. - talk about adding insult to injury!

If you do wind up moving forward with it, would you mind letting us know? I'd be very interested to know what docs think and how it goes. Now that I'm ready to face life post-PE in a non-panicked manner, it's nice to get back to a "normal" topic - ha ha!

Thanks for bringing this up and good luck! "

" RMB I choose to not get it put in but if I would have wanted it in he would have done it. Of course I have to be on Warfarin for life so it would have to be put in while i'm on it. "

" hey guys!!! (girls...)

well just to update you... I am having the copper IUD fitted on Monday. am VERY nervous... have been told by the docs that it will be 'uncormfortable' to fit. which means its gunna hurt like hell right?! they never come out and say that do they... but yes, have been warned that periods will now be long, heavy, and painful.

lurrrrvley!!

well, I'll write soon and let you know how it goes. but i am 100% sure that this is the right decision for me. Since stopping the pogesterone only pill, cerazette, two weeks ago, i have already dropped 4 pounds!!!!!!! eeek! and condoms are so expensive (why???!!) and oh so inconvenient!!

but yes... will keep you informed on how it goes... hmmmmmmmmmm "

" Exciting! You know what? You've had a PE, you can handle a pesky little IUD, juuuust fine!

But yeah, have heard same comments that it's "not pleasant" to be fitted. Oh, and I hear ya ... I just had first true menstrual cycle after being off BC pills, and god ... did I feel like curling up into a little crampy ball and lying on the couch for 3 days?! Oh, yes.

Congrats on the 4lb weight loss! Good luck! "
