Just wanted to let anyone who's interested in having HIFU for prostate cancer.............our insurance paid the full bill for the HIFU surgery in Toronto except for what was outstanding on our deductible of $39.00.
No hassles, no appeal........they just paid it. Blue Cross/Blue Shield. Good luck, and if you have any questions, please let us know. Posted on 05/19/08, 07:05 pm |

I am going with husband next week to his 1st visit with the oncologist. I plan on asking him about this procedure. We are on Blue Shieled but it is an HMO policy and we cannot get treatment out of the state unless we were to move elsewhere. I don't think moving to Canada for a few months is a viable thing, wish we could do something else. I just want to know why the HELL it takes our gov't officials so dang long to approve a treatment that is being used in a country that borders ours? I just do not get it. If it were later in the year i would truly consider changing policies to one that would allow him to go to Canada, more cost but worth it. I have read more and more about it. I even filled out the thing for clinical studies but NOTHING even remotely near us, no go on that. Ins would cover that. Go freaking figure. Good to see you again.

Depending on the situation, in many cases there is no reason to rush to treatment. Don't let the oncologist rush you to judgment.
Of course, if you change plans you may have problems with a pre-existing condition.

Right now we have BC/BS HMO, was thinking maybe if we could wait this out we could switch to PPO...would have to find out if HIFU would be covered then. Our ins only covers here in CA, unless we traveled out of state and had an emergency. Thats why they call it Blue Shield of CA, I call it Blue Shaft of CA

Hi everyone......in answer to your BC/BS and HIFU covered.
We have BC/BS of Nebraska, PPO. We used a urologist in Texas who flew to Toronto to assist in the HIFU surgery (HIFU CanAm of Toronto). Upon completion of the surgery, HIFU CanAm gave us a very detailed receipt for the cost of the surgery. I submitted the original receipt and an International Medical claim form for BC/BS of NE along with a copy of the biopsy report. So, 3 pieces of paper.....International Medical Claim form, HIFU CanAm receipt, and biopsy report. Didn't do anything else, although, the urologist in Texas was prepared to write a letter of appeal if the insurance claim was denied. Hope this info help...........good luck, and don't just walk away from the insurance. MAKE them review your claim! DK
