Hospital or home birth???

I recently visited 2 local hospitals that I was thinking of delivering in but I wasn't impressed :S The maternity ward seemed gloomy, no real colours on the walls, the rooms were tinny and you can't open the windows (I like having fresh air), and many of the nurses I saw seemed mean; one that I spoke to was also rude. The beds also look very small and the matresses are hard. It realy didn't seem cumfertible. I want to give birth someplace where i can be cumfertible. I've started thinking of a home birth so that I can realy have things the way I want and be cumfertible.
Has anyone been in this or a similar situation? What option did you choose? And if you've had a home birth what was your expereince like? How do you go about choosing a midwife? Posted on 07/23/08, 11:07 am |

wow... are there other hospitals?
I considered a home birth with my first, but then after learning all the prep and everything... it seemed to be more stress on me than I wanted, so I planned to have a birthing center or hospital birth. I ended up with a hospital birth because of pre-eclampsia. Check for local midwives groups.. they usually have birthing centers... kind of like a mini-hospital, but more cozy. and... most midwives have atleast one doctor in the group. good luck.

i agree with mkat. having a home birth seems like a whole bunch of stress with the prep, set up, etc.
i am using a hospital, however, maternity is in the children's portion of the hospital, and it is very upbeat and fun and exciting and pretty. birthing centers is also another option (as mkat said) they are very comfy, cozy, and very 'home like' good luck, let us know!!!

I do know a woman who did a home birth and loved the experience she had. Some midwives don't do home births so that will narrow down your choices, but I would ask if you have friends who have midwife recommendations in your area or if you are currently seeing an ob, ask him/her. I also know women who swear by birthing centers and they got to go home the day they delivered. Like others have said, in general, there are more home-like comforts available at a birthing center than a hospital. I chose hospital births for all of my children, but I really like the hospital where I delivered and my first daughter was in the NICU for a week after birth so I think the experience of having a sick child probably biased me toward the hospital where she received excellent care. I would agree though if you're not comfortable with your local hospital choices, you are smart to examine other options. Good luck!

i'll be using the hospital for my delivery mostly because I am on a blood thinner right now and shoudl any problems arise, there's the medical team right there. I have also been diagnosed with HPV so should there be any complications I will already be in the hospital.

I am planning on a hospital birth. My reasons being I would get stressed out with all the prep. If something happens to go wrong or I have to have a c-section, I am in the hospital and things can get taken care of and the doctor will be there. I just dont want to chance it.
My best friend had a midwife and not a doctor at the hospital and they messed up REALLY BAD. Their are only some things they are allowed to do. Her son had seizers up until the age of 4 when he passed away. I would do some research. Good luck!

I think whether I was at home or in the hospital I wasn't going to be comfortable LOL. I know a friend who had a home birth and things went fine for her. As for myself I even if I planned a home birth I would have to have gone to the hospital rushed and half way through labour anyways because they were debating an emergency C section... that would of really stank to be that far into labour and having to go to the hospital then... everyone has their own opinion on home birth... I think if I KNEW for sure everything would go off without a hitch and I for sure wouldn't want drugs etc. etc. I'd rather be at home... call me a worry wart but I'd rather be somewhere where they are ready and able to help in case of an emergency. I didn't care that our hospital was small and gloomy, all you notice after the baby is born is your baby and when you aren't fussing with him/her you're napping then before you know it you're going home. =)

i am totally hospital all the way.. i thought for like a second about a home birth.. but i really dont want the baby born in this negative environment.. a sterile hospital will be much better and most likely the only place i will get any peace.. then there is the added bonus of not having to worry about getting to a dr when and if one is needed in a hurry.. there is only one hospital i can deliver at here as per our insurance.. and according to the nurses at my OB office it just happens to be the best one in the area for delivery as they have an amazing "complications" area should they arise.. so that made me feel better.. all the power to those who can safely have a home birth.. i need to make sure that all is covered... just in case.

I am having am midwife, and im going to deliver in the hospital then going home as soon as possible to chill! Cause i didnt have the nicest experiance when i had my son. Im not really choosing a midwife, their just choosing one for me and im going along with it lol. I dont care who i get, and if she ends up mean (which isnt normally) then im just going to ask for a different one.
I cannot do a homebirth though, my son would not understand, he would just know he heard me in horrible pain and then a baby was here. Not good lol
