Hi all,

Im currently 17 weeks (in my 18th week) pregnant and have been looking at all my options. First of all i wanted a water birth at a birthing center but found out that i was not allowed to as i was concidered a high risk cause of my weight.

I then just faced the fact that i would have to have a hospital birth. Problem is i have always hated hospitals from a young age and have just grown to hate them more since my mum got breast cancer. The thought of having to give birth in one and even possible have to stay over night scares me half to death. Just thinking about it makes me panic.

I then reserched a little and relised that just cause this is my first baby doesnt mean that i cant have a home birth. I was overjoyed and so relaxed to find this out.

Ive tried to do a bit more reserch with no luck so was wondering if anyone can help me with my questions.

Firstly i worry that when i approach my midwife this week and tell her ive changed my mind and now what a homebirth that she will not let me. A- because its my first baby and b- because im overweight. Ive been so good since i got pregnant and have only gained 10lbs after 17 weeks of pregnancy.

Do you think that being overweight can cause them to refuse to let me have a home birth?

Also i know they will probably say no about a water birth but do you think that if i am allowed to give birth at home that they will let me use a birthing pool so that i can use the water to help me with my contractions and pain as well as gas and air as long as i get out the pool to give birth?

If anyone can help that would be great. Also if anyone knows of any good sites they can tell me of that go into depth and hold alot of information about home births i will be very much grate full.

Many thanks to you all :)
xxxx

" The fact that this is your first child they may opt for a hospital birth. The beauty of having a midwife is usually you can go home quickly like i know moms who have gone home with baby 6 hours after giving birth.
Im going that route this time, cause i hate hospitals too and the hospital i had my son in was really dumb.
If you type in "home birth" you get tons of results on google.com I cant even really tell you which ones to look at.
Good luck! "

" found this site... homebirth.org.uk/youcant/htm talks about the FACT that the only one who can say if you have a home birth is you. this is a UK site so it should have some good information for you.. and plenty of links to answer questions. according to this site... you decide what you have and the doctors or midwife can only advise you if it is appropriate, but you still make the decision. please just be careful, there are alot of things that can go wrong, try to make sure you are at least close enough to a hospital to get there in the even that it is necessary. Good Luck and God Bless. "

" If you're considered high risk because of your weight, you will NEED to be at the hospital. Don't be irresponsible with the health and welfare of your child--you'll have to get over that fear.
If it only involved you, I wouldn't flinch--but, if you are facing preeclampsia, diabetes or strain on your heart--you'll need to be a hospital. "

" hospitals are scary to some people and I didn't sleep a wink for 3 days when I had my son in the hospital (thank God for adrenaline). I kind of agree with Shelby though because a lot COULD go wrong with ANYONE during labour to you or your baby and if dr.'s are advising you against a home birth or an alternative to hospital birth I would really try not to keep fighting it. I worried about labour and the hospital almost from the minute I found out I was pregant with my son LOL but when the time came I could have given birth ANYWHERE I just wanted him OUT. I didn't notice anything around me but my husband... NOTHING literally. Hospitals can be uncomfortable to be in but if something goes off course you will be glad you were there and not stuck at home. " thank you so much for all your help :)

Although i am slightly over weight the reason the birthing clinic wont take me is cause they only accept normal straight forward people.

I have had no complications so far and cant see why my weight should stop me from being able to have a home birth. I did read something that said that having a home birth is safer then having a hospital birth "

" i dont think that i could agree with the safer thing. i mean a hospital birth was considered not safe a long time ago, back when they also beleived that if a woman died giving birth it was normal and oh well.. its just a woman. back when birthing was only starting to become a hospital function, they didnt even sanitize the birthing area like they do today. all was different and many diseases were had due to the conditions. i would say now.. having a baby in the hospital is the safest place to have one. i mean no matter what the circumstance they are equipt to deal with it. and no time is lost. things are much more sanitary so catching something in a hospital maternity ward is not as likely as it use to be. i had thought of a homebirth and then got freaked out about all that could go wrong, especialy since i am high risk.. hospital all the way for me. " Again, Butterfly...even if you are "slightly overweight" you are at risk. Do you want to turn around with an unsafe delivery and think: I wish I'd listened to the doctor and those ladies on DS?
In the states, you cannot make a decision like that (choosing to have a homebirth after you've been told no)...family services can come in and get involved in your life...potentially taking your child if they see you as unfit (I don't know a new mom alive who IS fit after birth!). "

" well i spioke to my midwife and she feels theres absolutely no reason i shouldnt be allowed a home birth and that its extremely safe.

I read about it beinf safer then hospital in a few books i have and also watched it on a dvd given to me by the nct (national childrens trust). They say that while people believe hospitals are better they in fact are not most of the time the case. They say that many complications with the baby happen because the hospital and it goes from there.

I didnt realise so many people on this formun were so against home births. Its a natural things from where i come from and thought i would get further advice on here. "

" If your midwife says it's safe for you to have a home birth that's great. I was also thinking about a home birth but have chosen to have a hospital birth instead. If a home birth is what you want and it's safe then you should go for it. Best of luck to you with your pregnancy and birth! Let us know how the birth goes once your baby is here! "

" Considering you were advised that it was unsafe...we are all supporting you going to a hospital--with the doctors there and available...they will be able to provide you and/or baby medical intervention.
Also, I don't know where in the UK you are...home birth there is considered just as it is here...
But, I support you having a safe delivery...but it's so early too! "
