Growth Ultrasound Accuracy?
Watch this

Hi. I went to the OB doc today and saw the Ultrasound Tech and according to her, my baby is 5 pounds 11 ounces. I'm only 32 weeks along. My doctor said this is a very large baby. However, they will not take him early, which is okay with me. I'm having a scheduled c section Aug. 4 anyway due to previous difficulties and a prior c section. My first two weren't overly large babies. My first was 7 pounds 7 ounces and my second was 8 pounds 4 oz. First was delivered at 38 weeks 5 days and my second at 39 weeks. However, my mother did have a 9 pound 13 oz baby and an 8 pound baby. The doctor did say that large babies are genetic. Anyway, to get to the point, does anyone have any experience with whether or not the growth ultrasounds are correct? Has anyone had an US and the tech said that it was a large baby and they decided to induce and then when the baby was born, was much smaller then previously thought? Not that it really matters, but my doc did say that when babies are this large, sometimes they don't make it to their due date because their just simply isn't anymore room in the womb. I have been having lots of braxton hicks and regular contractions too and she said that this is because of the babies size, but she checked me and I'm not dialated and I'm not soft. Anyway, I know this has been a long post, I was just curious. Thank you all in advance and I hope you are all doing wonderful.

" the size of the baby can vary by a pound (or more) either way. It depends on the u/s tech who takes measurements. It is based on a bunch of things including size of bones and skull... so if the u/s tech is a little off, so is the weight. My first son was supposed to have already been 9 pounds. They were going to induce me the following week, but he decided to come out early on his own. They were going to induce him 2 weeks early due to complications and because he was going to be like 12 pounds at full term.
He was 3 weeks early and only 8 pounds 2 ounces.

Then my girl was 8 pounds 8 ounces and 2 weeks early.

So I put not a bunch of faith in what they say for sizes unless the u/s tech has a good history of being correct.
And... I notice huge differences when I see different techs too.. I used to get the u/s every week and they didn't line up most times. "

" mkat is right-- u/s weight varies by up to pound. My first 2 babies were over 9 lbs, one was a week early and the other at 9 lbs 9 oz was 2 days late. With my son, they said he was over 9 lbs at 37 weeks so I was induced at 38 weeks, but he was only 8 lbs 8 oz. As an aside, my nephew was 11 lbs 3 oz and he made it just past his due date. Good luck. " I don't know what to think in all this baby size stuff...with my first two they were all concerned because they said my boys weren't growing enough...they were both full term and weighed 6,13 and 7,12...both pretty close to average. This time though they told me at mu US 2 weeks ago (30wks) that my "little" girl was already 4 1/2 lbs...they are going to induce me early if I don't go into labor early only b/c my first two weren't very big...I will say that this time around I am HUGE!! So maybe they are right?! "

" None of my babies were as much as they were measured out to be on an ultrasound (I've had 3). I think the measurements are only as good as the person who is doing their job. "

" My Ob was way off with my son. They guessed my son was 7 1/2 lbs almost 8lbs. I dont know what math they use to tell how big he was, but that is what they told me. I was 8 months at the time. My son was born 6lbs 7oz. I was full term. I think it was because of his length, he is much longer than most babies. But I wouldnt panic. "

" We had an ultrasound 3 days before we induced with our 3rd and it said he was over 9lbs. He weighed 8lbs 1oz. My friend just had her baby and they did the ultrasound and said she was no bigger than 7 1/2 lbs, they ended up doing a c-section due to some complications and sweet baby girl weighed 8lbs7ozs!!! "

" I had a friend that was told her baby was almost 8 pounds and 4 days later she went into labor and deliveried a 5lb. 12oz. baby boy. In my case, I was being told my baby was on the small side. At 37 weeks I was told she weighed 5lbs. 11oz. I was induced at 39 weeks 1 day because of ammo. fluid getting low and she weighed 6lbs. 4ozs. My doctor measured a few extra times to make sure he was getting a pretty good guess on her weight. "

" I haven't had them tell me a size and be off, but I have had them change my due date because of the size.. With my second, I had like 5 due dates! The last one was Christmas day, they induced me on Jan 4th, and he ended up being only 37 weeks and 8 pounds, 7 ounces. I did have a friend that was a few weeks behind me during that time. They told her the baby was 10 pounds already at her 39 week ultrasound. He was born a few days later and weighed only 5 pounds! "
