Hey so I'm 27 weeks pregnant. Before I was pregnant I was taking a few different meds for anxiety and depression and to help me sleep. Well I stopped them all right before I found out I was pregnant. Recently in the past 2 months my doctor has talked about wanting to start me back on them, and I've resisted so far, but it's getting to the point where it probably is safest for me to be back on something. So does anyone know of any medications that are safer for the baby and stuff? Obviously my doctors knows I'm pregnant and will know best just wondered if anyone else had any experience in this situation.

hi there i have the otis site i ll be giving it to you in this.
All the research i have done states that as long as you waited for the 3-5 mths then you can start up your stuff. You should probably start it ASAP after the baby is born unless you plan to breastfeed. Almost all medicines out there secrete in the breast milk. If you are weary about taking any meds try vermiallian tea or sleepy time tea for the sleep and fish oil helps tons. You can ither increase your fish intake or get a pill form just make sure its gell coated. Its easier to swallow and has no after taste if its this type. here is the otis :http://otispregnancy.org/otis_fact_sheets.asp Just goes alphabetically so type in your med and or look in the site. also ask your doctors for information sheets on the meds. If you cant find it on the otis site. Also know that you are going to need to start your meds after the birth cause post partum hits people with depression much faster and it can cause you to relapse into a worse depression. Which isnt good for ither you. You or your baby. message me if you want other information i will type up some stuff that i have if you want it. Hugs, good luck with you.

I have been on mirtazapine for over a yr for anxiety, im trying to switch over at the moment as we are ttc and my doc said those ones i def have to come off , so i was switched to dosulpin (they didnt agree with me) and now she has prescribed me fluoxetine (prozac) which i havent started taking yet, so these ones are recorded as safe, i would go to your doctor though as everyone is different and they will know what to put you on

I wouldn't start back on them until the baby is here. But after it is here, if you need them, then take them.

you say the doc has suggested you go back on them but you have resisted so far, if you have been resisting well and feel that you can get through this, then dont go back on them, not until after the baby's born, the longer you can go without them the better, it is better to be off them but if you have to and the benefits outweigh the risks then speak to your doctor.

in all the research that i looked at and was told that you shouldnt be on any meds for 1 mth and then you can start trying to have kids.
the first 3mths are the developemental stage for the fetus you cant be on any meds for that time period to 5 mths. If in the second trimester you need meds then you can be on them. But the dosage has to be monitored through blood tests. Also you have to see your med doc periodically. i know for a fact that most of the meds out there cause malformites it depends on which one your taking. i have data that backs 20 years of information on all of the meds and followup data on the mothers and children. None of the meds are safe it all has to be weighed and looked into. All of the medications are on a classification list. Most are d meaning that they are high risk. Only one is a class c. I asked my med doc and he stated that there arent any out there that are lower the class c meds of to which i have a list is very small. So evaluate everything and if you want more information ask.

With most meds, it is a case of risks versus benefits.
I am on lamictal for my bipolar disorder. There was no way it will be healthy for me not to take SOMETHING. I researched before I got preggo though. My advice is to do whatever you feel is necessary to preserve your sanity. If your are having serious problems, then the 5% chance of a rare birth defect is far outweighed by you needs. Your baby needs a sane and healthy mom when he gets here. Things only get worse mentally after the baby arrives. No sleep, high stress levels, baby blues that can turn into post-partum depression. I had the depression with both of my previous children. Became suicidal before I sought help. Don't let things go too far before you seek help. There are drugs out there that are absolute no-nos during pregnancy, but there are alot of them that are ok. the OTIS site is a good one. I used it to research my options before I got pregnant. Good luck

This is great info. I was taking tegretol xr but i got pregnant while on it once i found out i was prego i got off but i know the risks all i can do is try to think positive and doc put me o the highest dosage of folic acid.
She told me haldol was safe but it gave me the tremors so i decided to stop. It's best to not take anything if u can handle it but every situation is different. U just have to have faith and stay positive xxx

I have been on lexapro and continued it with no probs. Even with Lexapro I still have bouts of depression, and anxiety. If I have a "bad" day my baby balls up and goes into a fetal stress postion. the Dr told me the risks of Lexapro were far less than that of a depressed Mom. Remember that little baby can tell if you are anxious or depressed. You even said that you think it may be safest to be back on something, ask your OB what they think would be best
