Ok I have seen on here multiple times the suggestion for and against sudafed while pregnant. Well I had a doctors appointment today so I figured I would ask and get an answer for us all. My doctor said that Sudafed was one of the last things he would advise a pregnant woman to take, but in the end each person should consult their doctor before taking any medications while pregnant. He said that Sudafed is a stimulant that can stress the baby.
It is classified as a category C: Animal reproduction studies have shown an adverse effect on the foetus and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in humans, but potential benefits may warrant use of the drug in pregnant women despite potential risks. Percocet is another category C medication, sorry it's the only example of another category C that comes to mind right now. Upon internet research Sudafed has also been attributed to a rare birth defect in which the baby is born with its internal organs outside it's body. For me personally, the fact that sudafed is used in the production of methanphedamin keeps me from taking it even when not pregnant, but that is my own personal choice. In the end you should all contact your doctor when it comes to taking even over the counter medications for colds and such. Hope this sheds more light to the subject. My Dr. said the same about sudafed. I have been on vicoden almost my whole pregnancy and didn't know it. Two mos ago I asked for a non narcotic thank goodness, but my friends Dr. put her on vicoden while pregnant. Is that good?

I had to take vicodin during my pregnancy, I delivered a healthy baby girl! It is most harmful in high doses close to term, as it may cause respitory difficulty. I doubt you did any damage..

Oh, and Im glad that we got a definate answer to the sudafed issue... I mean come on, has anyone ever taken the stuff, pregnant or not, the stuff just amps you out, it just cant be good. Thanx

vidodin is a category c drug as well, however, it is mostly tylenol (like 95% or something). Like kegsmom said, the cautions are usually in high doses close to term. I am sure you will be fine and your baby as well. My doctor wanted to prescribe me vicoden for a pre-existing health condition and if I need it I will take it. There is a website that I use to see the effects of prescription medications at rxlist.com It may be helpful to you as well. The pregnancy information is under warnings and percautions. i am happy to see some people that take vicoden here. My shoulders are killing me, I have no idea why but it wakes me in the middle of the night. This is new since pregnancy. I take tylenol before bed but it does no good. Maybe a ican try a small amount of vicoden.

Could the confusion around Sudafed be the change in the formula in the last few years? I know many medications have changed so they can be sold from the shelf rather than from behind the pharmacy - I don't know if this is a California thing, but for some meds, you have to get it from behind the pharmacy and show photo ID and sign for it (I guess because you can make meth from some OTC products). It is important to talk to your dr. before taking most things. I also think it is more important to be careful early in pregnancy, and finally, I don't know if there are that many OTC products that would harm your baby if used a handful of times, but you should definitely be careful with long term use of any medication.

With my last 2 pregnancies they had sudafed on the list of safe medications to take when you're sick, but this time they have removed it from the list my ob's office gives out, Now I've bounced around from site to site looking at the diff classifications for diff pain medication because I have take some during my pregnancy and I found more often then not that percocet was listed as a catagory b drug because there has been human testing done and there has been no adverse effects on the baby if take as prescibed, I did as well find that darvocet actually has more warning or potential risk to your baby then any narcotic pain medicine, which is what a lot of docs prescribe to pregnant women because it is the most mild(from what I've been told) I for one am kinda sick of all the mixed information they have our there, we all get diff info on everything it's enought to drive us all nuts! You would think when it comes to something like nuturing another life they would all be on the same page(the ob's)
