Hi Everyone
Im new to this support group, and im not sure if i have PCOS or not. I have looked at the possiblity before and taken it to my GP but they are very dismissive and nothing was ever done to find out if i have it or not. I am now looking at going back to see if they will find out this time or not (im going to see a different doctor). I have looked at symptoms on the internet but every website has something different so i thought i would ask people who know. My periods are very unpredictable, (well getting more predictable as time goes on) I am on the contraceptive pill and even though i am still having the problem the GP just keeps changing the pill and nothing is working. I will have a 7day break and have a period during this time, I then start taking my pill again and within 8days i have come on agin, I am on for about 7days then im off for about 4-5days, then come on again until about 1-2days before my next break at which time i come on again. None of the periods are light, they are all very heavy and i get extream stomach pains with them. Along with this i have what i would call unusual hair growth. I have dark hair which makes this worse. I have a lot of hair on my arms and on my lower back, i also have some on my lower stomach kinda like guys do, sort of following up from the pubic area. I find this very embaressing and try to cover up as much as possible, i have also been bullied because of it which makes me even more self concious. I was just wondering really if there is anything else that may indicate that i could have PCOS and if anyone has any advice then that would be great. Thank you so much x Posted on 10/13/08, 09:10 am |

The only true way to know is your Dr. has to run the correct tests. They found mine when they did a HSG Hysterosalginogram. Which I will tell you is not very fun to go through. I've had 2 one awake and 1 when they knocked me out and that is the way to go. They can also find it with a Diagnostic Laparoscopy or and ultrasound. Don't back down from the Dr's push them to find out what is going on. It is very important that you know if you have it or not. Good luck :)

I went to my Gyno for pains with my periods and infertility, and she still said that there was nothing wrong with me. I'm average weight, but I carry fat around my waist; I have acne, and lots of hair growth. I finally had to go to a reproductive endocronologist. He diagnosed me with PCOS last week. I don't have the classic symptoms, but I do have more than 3 of the symptoms. My periods are irregular and vary from 35 - 45 days.
I would go to another doctor if I were you. A specialist was finally able to tell me what was wrong with me. Good Luck!

See a gyno or endocrinologist...they specialise in hormones and reproductive things. They are the ones that will be most helpfull. My general dr told me there was nothing wrong with me. For years I was so confused and I knew that there had to be something. The first day I went to my gyno she was almost positive that I had pcos and was upset that my dr said that I didn't have it. She ran some tests to be sure, and it turns out that I do have it. Don't give up your fight to find answers, whether or not you have pcos. Some things they could test for are hormone levels such as testosterone, progesterone, insulin(a big one in pcos). Irregular periods, abnormal hair growth, and the darkened skin patches are all symptoms. Others could be Insulin resistance(you have to get tested for this), acne, overweight (especially in the mid section), difficulty loosing weight, infertility...the list goes on. It is important to know that you do not have to have all of the symptoms to have pcos. It affects all of us differently. I wish you the best of luck and don't give up!
