I had a MRI today on my brain that my reg doctor ordered and the MRI tech said that she had ordered that he use a dye (contrast dye) to get a more clear view of my head whn he came in mind you i had to take axanax b4 going cuz anxiety.. I stopped him when he was already putting the dye in my vein and asked if he was sure he should be using this on me cuz i have a kidney disease PKD and all of a sudden he stopped and said that he had only used half of it and that he would stop there.. I had heard in the past about a contrast dye used in CT scans but thought to be safe i better ask .. So now i have been looking this stuff up and its really scary it says noone with kidney disease should have that dye cuz it can cause something like NSF which of course now im freaking out!!!!!! My kidneys do function at 100% does that make a difference?? Ayone know anything about this ?? Please any advice?

" When I had a brain MRI, my doctor gave me some meds to take before and after the procedure to protect my kidneys. My advice is call your doctor right away! Your kidney function at 100% is great, but you want to keep it that way for as long as you can. If your doctor can give the meds right away, it might help. You did really good telling the tech because my doctor also used a smaller amount of contrast to help. Call your doctor! Big hugs! "

" Thank You all for your reply's I got a hold of my nephrologist and she said it was COMPLETLY Fine because my kidneys function normal (100%) Its only for people on dialysis or with very very low function because there body cant get rid of the dye .. Gee thank goodness any ways that the tech stopped putting the dye in when i told him about my PKD so i only got half a dose anyway . It amzazes how these docs have no communication skills to at least let an MRI tech know our health conditions Im starting to think i should be wearing some sort of bracelet that lets people know what medical conditions i have .. Being on that xanax was a little wierd i felt DRUNK so i wasnt thinking with a full deck .. K thanks again ladies "

" I'm glad you were able to get your question answered. I'm surprised that the place you went didn't have you fill out a form asking if you had kidney disease or stones.
Unfortunately there is a communication gap between medical professionals so it is definately a good idea to let anyone doing any tests or procedures know you have pkd. I'm really glad to hear that your function is at 100 percent. That's definately a good place to be. Have you spoken to your doctor about ways to protect that function? Now is a good time to work on that.
I wish you the best with your health. "
