I have 3 dogs, 3 cats, 2 guinea pigs and 1 ferret, one of my guinea pigs is 5 years old and I know her time is coming but I am terrified of losing any of my pets, somedays it really gets to me and I just think I cannot go on if they leave. I have lost many pets before and I survived it somehow but it still scares me so bad to lose them, even knowing they are safe and knowing I will see them again, it doesn't help too much.
But everyday I am so thankful to have them in my life, I never let a day pass without being thankful for one more day. Posted on 10/24/07, 01:10 pm |

You sound like me! I lost my 2 dogs over a period of 30 yrs and no one seemed/ seems I still hold them in my heart. Rather than live in fear of losing them, live in joy that you have them and stop planning how you will react to it when you do lose them. That way you will have fond memories to look back on, not negative memories. Hope this helped.

I can completely understand your fear of losing your pets. I have experienced the horrible loss, as you have already. When I was depressed in my 20s, I think my dogs, who have both passed away, saved my life many times. Try your best to not focus on what may happen in the future. It is hard, but when we worry about the future so much it impacts our enjoyment of today.

I probably can't talk as I posted how I cant get over losing my cat 12 yrs ago but he was run down. And went before his time. When I was young my mum would make a fuss when out pets passed and we'd have a burial and sing hyms, like a proper funeral and it always helped. When my hamster passed last year we had a burial and went out for a meal for a wake to remember her. It probably sounds imature but it helped loads.

It is such a helpless feeling to think about losing a beloved pet and I can totally relate to that fear. My partner and I adopted a 7 year old lab/golden mix 2 years ago and she is the love of our lives. The thought of losing her (which comes sooner when adopting an older animal) can be overwhelming sometimes. I agree with Carrie about living in the joy rather than the fear...very well said! Its hard sometimes but I think if you get stuck in the fear for too long you miss out on being present with your animal who is still very much here... I think sometimes people get stuck in thinking about a potential loss because it seems like a practical way of preparing for its (if that makes sense) But often it just creates sadness and anxiety as there really is no way to prepare for losing a loved one, which makes it even more important to cherish the time you have while they are still here!
