How often do you meet with your Therapist?

I am struggling between how much i need to see my therapist and how much i can afford. I have been seeing her once a week and some pretty intense issues have been coming up. My therapist is willing to see me twice a week if I decide to. I have been working with her a long time and really trust her but i also feel the need to budget how much i spend on therapy. I was in a rehab for four months last year and i still am not working due to my recovery. In the past, I have worked with her on a twice a week basis and it did help me get through some hard stuff. I don't know if I am reluctant to do the twice a week because I am scared to face the current issues coming up for me or if I don't think I deserve all the attention, or I just really shouldn't be spending so much money. I have a lot of issues with self-anger and self-harm and I don't want to deprive myself of something that might be needed.
Anyway, just wanted to get some scenarios on how often you meet with your therapist and if you have any other suggestions. Thanks in advance for any help on this! Posted on 07/03/08, 07:07 pm |

Congratulations on how far you've come in your recovery. Maybe you can go twice one week and once the next.

I used to go 2x a week. Then I had to change therapist and can only see this one once a week as that is the policy of the mental health unit that I go to.
I would prefer twice a week if I could because I find it hard to go a whole week holding onto things we have talked about and also I get a lot of fear that my therapsit wont turn up, will be angry with me etc and that is hard to have for a whole week. However going once a week does help me to feel less dependant and deal with those issues of trying to hold onto relationships when the other person is not there, so in some ways once a week helps me think I am growing a bit. Guess it depends on your personal issues as to what would be best for you but if you think that 2x a week would help you and you can afford it I would say give it a go.

I guess it is true that i could go twice a week for a week and see if it is helping. If not, then go back to once a week. Thanks for helping me see that there is a "grey zone" answer. I tend to think in black and white...that it has to be one way or the other.
I can totally relate to falling into those abandonment issues...my perception that my therapist will forget what we are working on or who i am if i go only once a week. I get ashamed of feeling too dependent on her. But hey, guess that is something i can talk about with her! Thanks for the insights.

Since my hospitalization last month i have started to go back to seeing my therapist 1x a week...the first 2 weeks i was seeing her 2x a week...this is all with the exception of the next 2 weeks...she is on vacation...but i think that if you feel the need to do twice a week or just once a week...its really a small price to pay for what you are working toward...

I meet once a week but it's getting expensive with gas prices since my therapist (and pdoc and regular doc) are an hour away. I am thinking of moving closer to them to save the money. I wish there were a situation where I could meet them everyday until they "fixed" me! I say go as often as is needed - your health is more important than anything else you could spend your money on!

I go once a week to mine, more sessions are offered if I feel I need them but I haven't needed them yet. Can you talk to your therapist about a payment plan or a sliding scale of payment for extra sessions? Maybe that might help you a bit

I actually have to limit how many times I go to therapy so I DON'T have self harm actions!
If I stick around too long, or come too often...I start having a "reason" to come. Call it my Borderline acting up, but I think papeaches has the right idea. Huggles headed your way!

I think I am going to do what papeaches said and go twice one week and once the next week. Having a routine schedule is important to me for some reason. I have thought of asking my therapist to do a sliding scale but I struggle with asking for this. It is hard for me to feel that I am worth it. It's like I am asking for a special condition and if she gives it to me I will feel guilty. I thought maybe I could just tell her what I can afford every month and then maybe she can tell me how many times she can see me for that amount. Suddenlysnape, I have those feelings, too. I think that if I go too much I will create issues that aren't already there. I have to be careful that I don't get too attached to my therapist. Thanks again for tall the suggestions and support!
