How did your PD start?

Ok.. I don't have PD (I hope), but am curious as to how your PD started. Was it little, how did you notice it etc?
I'm just asking because 2 times in about a week or so I've had tremors, and another time a week before that. These tremors were at rest, and were in the "core" of my body, almost like it was in my intestines and seemed to move the rest of my body from inside. My arms, shoulders, legs, and middle. I had a hard time taking a relaxed breath while this was happening. I didn't really have anxiety when it was happening, but it was highly annoying/frustrating. My latest one lasted a few hours with small breaks inbetween. Unfortunently I'll have to wait a month before I can see a doctor. Posted on 10/06/08, 11:10 am |

and I'll have to add that I'm not taking any medications at all right now, so it wasn't drug related.

Hi nik, First of all I really hope it ain't PD too as there are other illnessess your tremour could be related to, or more than likely it could be something more easily treatable.
I have PD and the first I noticed was the tremour in my right hand whenever I was aggitated, anxious, under stress, upset or even when happy or surprised and the very same things trigger the tremour today 16 yrs on. I must admit that I ignored it for a few months and it was family who encouraged me to get it sorted. The PD tremour occurs mostly when resting but being in certain situations that become embarrassing can also cause them too, leaving you feeling very vulnerable. I could go on for a while my friend, but what I will say to you is whatever it turns out to be you must be strong & have a positive attitude in all you do and you won't go far wrong. I sincerely wish you well and a whole load of good luck...Oh, I almost forget..Keep Smiling. Warmest regards Dirk ;-)

Hi Nik,
I haven't been diagnosed yet, but my first 'real' symptoms included stiffness in my upper left back/shoulder and slowness which then resulted in mild depression. That came and went for nearly 3 years before a slew of other things started up. Like Dirk, if you have PD, keeping strong and having positive outlook on life will help you go far. Wishing you best of health and hoping your tremors are perhaps just stress related and will go away soon. ((hugs)) Connie

Hi, Nik, I have read of PD patients describing the same kind of internal tremor you describe--some of them years before they ever experienced a visible, external tremor. How do you feel about alternative medicine? I ask because since you don't have a diagnosis yet and are not taking any meds yet, you might want to look into the Parkinson’s Recovery Project located in Santa Cruz. They take a non-allopathic approach to PD that has its champions as well as its detractors. I am not here to endorse/recommend them; I can't do that, as I have no personal experience with them. However, I have started to read their two books (available at their website) and a lot of what they say strikes a chord with me. Makes me wish I had found them before my Dad was put on the meds, because that disqualified him from participating in their treatment program. You, on the other hand, have nothing to lose. Good luck!

Hi Nik,
You look so young to have to start with this problem. There are so many other things that your symptoms could be and I pray you have none of them. Pd can be so slow in changing that you begin to think you don't have it and then another problem crops up just to let you know it's still back there. The wait is angonizing I remember for the doctor to make a decision mine started with little tremors also. Good luck let us know the outcome. Sass

Thanks for advice and sharing. I know I'm young, but I already feel old and have physical and mental problems, so I wouldn't be suprised if I developed PD.. but I do not tell myself that that's what it is and try to focus on enjoying my days rather.

Hey Nik!
Yup sure hope y've not got PD, I myself was dxd at age 34 following ±8 years of increasing symptoms... I'm 39 now. maybe relevant was increasingly severe insomnia & ED starting around 25 or 26; definitely relevant were the inexplicable tremors at rest on my dominant side (left) and stiffness/pain that I'd chalked up to carpal tunnel and general strain from my job. But the freq. and intensity of all those crept along over the years. At age 29 severe mental confusion & depression joined the party :) I did used to have internal-type tremors waaaay more frequently, but my med/supp combo has made those fairly rare now. I'd also have weird periods of hoarseness/inability to control my voice that would only occur when I was tremoring. Please forgive me if I've mis-read your bio info, but I see you're in the schizophrenia support group also? Both PD and schizophrenia are dopamine-related disorders (as I'm sure you know!); a doctor-friend calls them like neurochemical bookends. I've often wondered if there's an overlap between the 2; maybe the brain cranks out toooo much dopamine(resulting in schizophrenia) until the substantia nigra like 'burns out' in some people, leading to parkinsonism.... lots of research shows that both may well be triggered by environmental exposure to pesticides, heavy metals exposure(lead, mercury, magnesium, etc-- not Slayer or Dimmu Borgir :) ) which are basically my life/work history. Grew up literally next door to a pesticide factory, worked as a printer, glass blower, got soaked more than a few times by crop dusting etc... any of those type things in your history? So, very best wishes to you and good luck-- and don't let any doctors dismiss your concerns!

I don't have schizophrenia actually, I just joined it because the disorder interests me. Past few days I have had that erectile dysfunction. Funny to talk about that, but as a man, you pay attention to those things because they matter lol. I've already went through some large periods of mental disturbances this year, but they have passed (I hope). I was exposed to something, but do not know what it is. All I know is that it happened suddenly in February, I rapidly lost weight unrelated to food intake, and the back of my throat permanently inflamed bumps etc (esophagal cancer?) sometimes while different hormones are active in my body (immune system activation?) I will cough up little tiny balls of blood from it. Sorry if thats gross. I just think its somehow related to my mental disturbances.

if that last part is interesting to you.. whenever I cough up those tiny balls, a bump from the back of my throat permanently dissapears.. like my body is detoxifying the unknown chemicals from it.

Nik,
I hope you get your throat, or whatever it is taken care of, as it sounds rather serious and not mentally related at all. I do think one thing to consider on the chance that you're at the beginning stages of Parkinson's is to get yourself started on CoEnzymeQ10. It certainly wouldn't hurt you. As well, I'm on the drug Low Dose Naltrexone, for RA but I have read that it helps with Parkinson's, and keeps it from getting worse. I don't have Parkinson's, my dad does, which is why I'm part of this group. Anyway, Low Dose Naltrexone improves your immune system and certainly wouldn't hurt you either, so it's worth a shot. If you have any questions, feel free to email me. Thanks!!! Best wishes, --Sarah
