Dear Fellow Parkies,
I have found an email address to the health editor at MSNBC! It is Health@MSNBC.com . In the subject line put "To the Health editor" and mention PD unity walk! I have sent him an email asking that they make an effort to cover the Unity Walk! What I'd like to see is that we flood this person with requests from 1000 + parkies and see just what kind of a difference we, as an online support group, can make! Below you will find my email to them , use it as a guide to create your own ! Or if your a better letter writer than I (whish isn't hard) write your own! Also get your friends and family to do the same! I could be effective if you could get your children involved! I realize most of us will not be there, but the ones who are can tell our stories if we can get NBC there with a camera! If you never do anything to raise awareness , or you do something every day , DO THIS! Your friend in PD! Michael Johnston Dear Health Editor, I would like to make you aware that the 14th annual Parkinson's Unity Walk will be held in New York City's Central Park on Saturday April 26, 2008. The goal of this walk is to raise money for research to find a cure for Parkinson's Disease. Currently it is calculated to have raised over $1,051,641 and that figure will raise daily as more teams report their donations! 100% of the donations go to fund research! There are teams from all over the United States as well as teams from overseas that raise funds from every thing like selling calenders of photographs by people with Parkinson's and crafts and arts made by people with Parkinson's to hosting awareness dinners and bicycle and motorcycle events and walks! But also, and probably more important, the Unity Walk is to raise awareness of Parkinson's Disease! April is nationally proclaimed as Parkinson's Disease Awareness Month and many groups and individuals make exceptional efforts to raise awareness in their home towns , home states and any where we can get a venue! This brings me to my point(or plea)! If NBC would take it upon themselves to make an effort to report on this event, show footage on every news cast during the day and make special reports on it's progress, you could further our effort to raise as much awareness as possible at least 10 fold! The impact you could make would be incredible! There are hundreds of stories of people doing extraordinary things to help with this project ! There are also hundreds of small to large organizations that daily do things to raise awareness that will be there to promote awareness of this dreaded disease that is affecting well over 2 million people and growing everyday! So almost everyone you talk with there would be a human interest story in it's self! I realize that I'm just one person with Parkinson's Disease from a small mountain town in Northeast Tennessee, but I just have to ask! If I don't, I would not have done all I could do! If you need more information or a list of groups to interview, please feel free to ask ! I can be reached by email at tennmike1957@yahoo.com or by cell phone at 423/360-3790. Sincerely, A friend in PD! Michael Johnston Bristol Tennessee Posted on 04/16/08, 09:04 pm |

Although I cannot make the Unity Walk in NYC, I am conducting my own Walk locally. As a registered walker, I have already reached my donation goal. In addition, our local newspaper will be running an article on my endeavor in the hope of raising PD awareness and financial support through donations. I also wanted to use my Walk as a forum to see if there is a need in my community to create a local support group, especially for YOPD. There is still time to get involved. If you can't go to NYC or do your own Unity Walk, it is being broadcast live through a webcast. Register through the Unity Walk website and invite family and friends over to watch the 14th annual Walk as it unfolds. United together, we all can make a difference.
