Hello, I'm new

I'm new here. My name is Lisa and my child was recently diagnosed with ADHD.

Our issues began last year when we lost my great-grandma and my mother-in-law within 6mo of each other to cancer. My husband moved out of the house to care for his sick mother from October til May so my 7yo and I only saw him and my 4yo on the weekends. It was rough, but all that is behind us now.

About December of last year, my 7yo's teacher (first grade) began complaining about her inability to focus, her emotional outburts when she has to stop doing something she enjoys, her lack of reading comprehension, inability to keep on task, etc...None of which I was seeing at home. Her comprehension in reading is top-notch, if it's something she's interested in. Give her a Magic Schoolbus science book and she'll tell you all about it for days afterward.

Anyway, I was wary of medication so we started going to a therapist and working on focusing techniques such as: using special paper to write on at school, using colored pencils, sitting away from distractions, near the teacher...just a bunch of different things. Nothing worked. After a lengthy process, we finally got to see a neurologist (teacher said she had "staring episodes") and then a psychologist at Dayton Childrens Hospital just these past couple weeks. My daughter is in 2nd grade now with the same teacher. The psych. ran all his tests and diagnosed her ADHD. Tomorrow we go to our pediatrician to discuss what to do next.

My husband is afraid of medication. I havea nephew on Adderal and a neice on Stratera and both are doing wonderfully and really taking off in school. My 7yo is amazingly bright, as many of these kids are, and I feel like not giving her the meds (at least for school) is holding her back from her potential. We've also just begun the process for a 504 plan with the school.

So, that's my story and where we are now. It's nice to meet you all.

Thanks,
Lisa

" sounds like you are on the right track, as far as meds I do not like to give them to my daughter either, but they help her through the day with less frustrations and stress. the merry go around their minds are on his hard because they have no control, so they have behaviors and outburst. my daughter is on vyvsanse. the last 3 yrs. in school her grades were horrible.her behavior was horrible, we started this year off with vyvsnse and a 504 plan and it has been great her grades are A's and B's this has been on going since kdg. she is now in 7th grade. I wish you the best of luck., I will tell you that with meds it may take awhile to find the right one. my daughter could not take adderall. "

" Most parents don't want to give there children medication and like you I was frightened. I then realised without meds my son was on a downward spiral and had no quality of life at all. My son was okay at home and could cope without meds in the school holidays and I was advised to do this. You do what you think best for your child, but I know through working at a school that children who can't cope at school without meds get labelled the naughty child and this brings lots of different problems. Good luck. "

" How do you all know which meds to request for your child, or do you go with what the dr. suggests? I like what I've read about vyvanse. except for trouble sleeping. I also am interested in stratera simply because my neice has had great success with it. My husband worries, as I do, about the side effect of becoming suicidal. "

" My sons psychiatrist advised us what tablets he should take and was monitored very closely. My son took Ritalin then tried strattera but this had no effect at all. He finally went on to Concerta which was very successful due to its slow release which lasted all day at school. Only side effect for my son was losing his appetite. "

" We started her on Concerta 18mg this morning after breakfast. I guess now we just wait and see how she reacts to it. "
