Mood Swings

Yesterday we were helping someone move, my son didn't want to be there and his mood was black. He made it hard for everyone involved to get around because he was throwing a fit when any one of his siblings bumped him as they passed him in the hallway loaded with boxes. He refused to respond to me when I called his name, walking away as though I was not present. He refused to speak unless it was to berate a sibling. He simply let go of a dolly as it was being pushed out of a door and had his older brother not been walking behind him, a very expensive piece of furniture would have been destroyed. I sent him to the car because he was becomming a danger to not only the things being moved but to people around him. It was so embarassing.

His mood continued until we reached home and he received a phone call from a girl that he likes. In an instant he went into a state of euphoria. He was happy to the point of being abnoxious. He was smiling and talking a hundred miled a minute. It was difficult to uinderstand him. He was all smiles and laughter. Then he began acting like he was on a trampoline, bouncing around, geting in people's personal space and causing general mayhem. He went from one mood to the next in less than 90 seconds.

In his dark moods he acts defiant to the point of having injured me. In his giddy state he is overtly happy and obnoxious. I just hope that today his moods are a bit more evenly distributed...

" K has done the mood swing without anything obvious causing it. She can be find and playing and the next minute screaming crying and trying to hurt herself then within seconds she wants to cuddle and it's as if nothing happened. She is being treated for bi-polar disorder and her medicine surely helps, now instead of seversl episodes aily she might only have a couple a week. Still they are interesting. "

" How old is your child? I am told that my son is too young to have bi-polar disorder. I believe that he does suffer from it however. How did you get a diagnosis? I was told that He may be diagnosed with it by his late teens or early twenties. His father is severly bi-polar. I want to help normalize my son to the meds and other support before he gets too old to care what I think. He is 14 now. "

" There are doctors that will dx childhood bipolar. you do not have to wait until teens. find a qualified ADHD child psychologist who can determine if in fact it is bipolar. also a good neuropsych would be good. That needs to be treated 1st before the ADHD to be successful with treatment. Good Luck "
