Psychologist says kids can't be Bipolar?

I talked to my son's child Psychologist over the weekend and was letting her know how emotional he was being. He had so many ups and downs, one minute happy, then sad, then down right mad! The first thing she said was that children can't have bipolar. Ive read numerous posts about children being bipolar so is she right or wrong or does it just depend on the Dr.? What do you think?

My daughter was labeled bi-polar but there were several reasons. 1 her bio mom dad grandma are all bipolar. her mom my adopted daughter didn' show signs until in her early teens. 2 both her bio parents used drugs before she was conceived and mom continued until about 4 months pregnant. our dr said something about drug induced. she has the moods swings more violently than her mother ever had, also servire headaches and couldn't sleep. She is also adhd and may have alcohol problems. In her case it might not be tpyical bi-polar but it was the best medicine at the time it got rid of most headaches and she sleeps good at nights. We have changed doctors sinc she started on medicine and the new one doesn't like to say children that young are bi-polar. I kinda think that over half of the adults that are labeled bi-polar and are on disability would not be if they hadn't used drugs. Meth is the worse thing to hit this country. Meth and pot has messed up all of my grandchicldren in some way.

the odds are greater for her to be bipolar if either of the parents are or there is a family history. she is wrong, you can find it and ups and downs is a huge sign...good luck...can you get a second opinion?

I think I might get a second opinion. My mom is Bipolar but that is the only person I know in my immediate family that has it. My husband is also bipolar but he is not blood related to my son. After living with my huband for 8 years and going to see different dr.s with him I'm pretty sure I know what the signs are. I'm thinking he might be bipolar, he is already taking strettera for adhd. His sisters are starting to tell me they think he has what "dad" has. I was beginning t wonder he same thing but never mentioned it to the girls. He also sees and hears things all the time. I know that could be the meds he's on but ya never know.

Maybe we should let your psychologist send a few days with some of these children and see if she would change her mind. She sees the a short period fo time once a month. We were doing therapy one day and k had one of those episodes where she was okay and we were coloring a picture, all of a sudden she started screaming tore up the picture and threw it at me then tried to throw furniture screaming that she hated everyone and everything, then in a matters of seconds was sobbing and wanting a hug. She was only 3or 4. With the theapist referral she went on medicine shortly after that.

I think you need a second opinion. Children can have bipolar illness. It is considered uncommon, but for sure it exists.

I know that currently it is very controversial to diagnose Bipolar Disorder in children and teens, but strides are being made. I'd say that Dr is behind the times. Unfortunately, it is VERY tricky, and difficult to distinguish between BD and ADHD (close cousins). My son had 2 diagnoses of BD at age 3 but we got a THIRD opinion which was ADHD, and now that he is doing pretty awesome on Ritalin, we believe that was the right diagnosis for him, not bipolar. But did you see the Newsweek Magazine a couple of weeks ago?--the COVER story was bipolar kids!

Where did she get her degree? Off the back of a cereal packet?
Get your son to a new psych. This woman clearly doesn't know what she's talking about.
