My daughter has OCD, she also has panic attacks often associated with an obsessional thought. We have managed to keep her off of meds for the OCD, and use Behavioral therapy. This has been pretty successful, but now we are dealing with panic attacks. So far we use relaxation techniques (breathing exercises, visualization etc.. ), but I am wondering if we should try meds for the panic attacks? Is there a fast acting med one can take during an attack? What about a placebo? any thoughts on this?

My 16 year old has panic attacks, personally i would not allow her to take anything because i think they can be best managed with the relaxation therapy. i use a vitamin supplement called Stress ease it is a combination of b vitamins. it works quite well for me but please understand this is only my personal opinion I hope it helps.

Hi Lori. Here's an article on inositol,
http://www.naturaladd.com/resource... I would suggest speaking to your doctor about your daughter trying this. It's part of the vit. B complex. Here's the link on the Standard Process website, http://www.standardprocess.com/dis... for inositol. Standard Process sells the highest quality medicinal herbs and vitamins in the world. You can only get their products through a health care provider. I get mine through my chiropractor who also specializes in nutrition. If the doctor says it's OK, I would also recommend Stash brand cammomile tea. My friend's son was having anxiety attacks when he was young. She brought him to a psychiatrist who also specializes in homepathic remedies. The doc put her son on a course of homeopathic treatments (2 times) and her son hasn't had any problems since. Hope this helps. Nicki

Hi there..I am 27 and was diadnosed with a panic disorder last summer. I will share my experience with you. I was determined not to do the drug thing. Thought I could handle it on my own. Mine was brought on by stress which I didnt realize was fully there. Type of person who thinks they can handle anything. I tried yoga which REALLY helped me learn to deal with them while I was experiencing them and also made me feel fit. I took therapy..helped me learn about it but did not take care of the attacks. I had them quite ficiously. So after a few months of trying self healing I caved into meds with my family doctor who I ador. I was unable to even go for a five minute drive without stressing and having an attack and my spouse started getting frustrated because he couldn't even walk into the room with out me jumping because of my nerves. My docotr put me on a drup called citalopram. Very mild drug...the only side effect I experienced is when I took them at night I had major bad dreams and sweats....but that was just my side effect, so I take them early afternoon now. It took awhile for the drug to fully take it's affect but it truely has been a miracle not only has it helped my panic attacks it has calmed me down as a person,I am more relaxed and have more patience. I found my problem after I started having panic attacks was worrying about them which is what brought them on. It's a very difficult thing to deal with especially when people around you do not understand what it feels like. I would seriously talk to your family doc about different options. Alot of people are against drugs but a person can only take so much especially if your daughter is trying to just deal with the struggles of growing up period. My understranding of it all is like trying to make friends with the devil...once you've made the friendship it's an understandingbut until then it's just a fight. I hope this helps...and I hope you dont feel like you have to put her on drugs.....it's whatever works best for your daughter...it's about her. I have done alot of research on panic attacks as well since my first experience. Would love to talk to you moreon it!!! Hope the best for your daughter!

Hi Lori,
I would strongly advise against giving your daughter any medication, especially valium at such a young age. Valum is highly addictive. I have found that when i have taken seroquel for panic attacks (which is non-addictive) it makes you feel as though you cannot get through the attacks without medication and therefore you cannot help youself, which is a central theme of panic attacks. Your daughter needs to be able to learn that she may have a panic attack but it will pass. I understand that it is very hard, her being so young, but i congratulate you and your great work as a parent and hope that it will pay off and she will be panic attack and OCD free in later life. Good luck

Hi Lori. I take the brand name for citalopram, Celexa. It works great for me, but it's an SSRI anti-depressant. Psychiatrists are reluctant to prescribe anti-depressants to people under the age of 25 because they can cause suicidal thoughts in this age group. See what your doc thinks about meds as a possibility. Since your daughter is so young I would try to control / resolve the problem without meds first.

valium as needed is safe for children, panic disorder sufferers are generally too sensible to become addicted to valium if its properlt prescribed
citalopram is a prozac type antidepressant that works for some people but not for others, its not for children though, suicidal depression and lack of research being the main problems many stubborn and proud sufferers refuse to take meds, making their recovery slower

I wouldn't say we are "proud sufferers", it's simply a matter of protecting my child from long term harmful effects of drugs. Many of which have not been thoroughly tested with regards to children. Who knows what the drugs may do to a developing brain, let alone other parts of the body that process them... I'm simply researching our options and if necessary we will use meds..
