Okay, so I was seeing a physcologist and he prescribed me Ativan and Zoloft. After 2 days the Ativan just kept making me more anxious so I decided that I didnt want to take medication anymore and cut them both off. He recommended CBT and gave me a physciatrist to go to, in which I have been. I have been going to this guy for 2-3 weeks now, and I go back to see him tommarow morning. I was just wondering, isnt CBT giving you breathing techniques and giving you exercises to overcome your panic attacks? Because whenever I go there we just talk about how my week has been going, and why he thinks I have developed panic attacks. He also tells me everytime that I should try going back to school, even though I told him I don't think I'm ready yet. These sessions do help me for a day or two, but then the rest of the week I become anxious again. Should he be giving me exercises to do? And should I ask him about this? I really want to be able to get my life back in order, and it doesnt seem like this is helping me. I really like my physciatrist, but I want to know if he is going to be able to help me in the long run, not just for a couple of days.

If he is supposed to be giving me exercises to do throughout the week then how can I ask him nicely about it? Or what are the questions that I should ask him? Any help is appriciated!!

" CBT is learing about breathing and slowing it down. You should be told to do this at least 4 times a day and trying to go for walk even if its only 15mins a day.

You should also be trying to work out what it is that triggers you PA's and working on changing your thinking.

If he is just asking how you have been and asking you to go back to school maybe your better off finding someone else. as CBT int just a chat session its about finding what it is making you have panice attacks.

I used to have to write down where i was what i was doing and what i was thinking befor i had the PA. Its alot harder then u think and takes time.

Good luck and i hope you get to the bottom of it.

Hold in there :)

" Well he thinks that I'm having panic attacks because of my upbringing. My dad hated my brothers (he is thier stepdad) and my brothers have always been into drugs. And all of my friends and cousins (basically my whole family) has been too. So he said "I think your having panic attacks because you saw your brother go to prison for so long and you've been around drugs and thats not normal to be around drugs at such an early age, let alone at all"... but I don't think that thats the reason why.. that stuff doesnt bother me.. i dont know.. " Dont you hate it when they think they know why it is the way you are!

I totally agree it probley is the 'drug' thing. Thats what im saying you need to be with someone who maeks you do exersises and it YOU who finds out what it is. They are only there to help guid you.

I have the same problem EVERY social worker except one has asked me about my 'childhood' I was sexual abused my my spet fater for about 5 years! But i KNOW thats not the cause of my trubbles but the keep pushing it!

The on lady i did CBT with wand who didnt bring that up was just wounderfull! I wish i could see her again but due to the goverment and the funding i was only allowed 3 sessions with er. and evern in those 3sessions she did an amazing job!

You really need to hunt down someone who YOU know is helping you and helping you find out what triggers you to have a PA.

It might take you 2 or 3 different people to find the right one.

So good luck with it and if you know its not the "drug" issues then tell him we needs to work on other things!

Goodluck. Let me know how you go or just drop me a PM if you ever wanna chat :)

" it is breathing exerscises but it is also changing your thought pattern basically they treat you mind as a computer and like a computer wrong information can mess it up but when the correct info is put in ,it will then work, so what cbt does is to retrain you thought pattern and behaviours, and yes it will help you in teh long run because you meet you fears you change your thoguth pattern and if it ever creeps up again you can always relate back to the cbt, talk to you therpist and ask him to go through it with you "

" Well I asked him today if he was supposed to be giving me exercises and things to do and he said that it varies with people. He said with me, I'm very stubborn and if he gave me an exercise I would probably tell him I would do it and then just never do it, so there isn't a point in giving me an exercise until I change my way of thinking. Which is true, I'm the most hard-headed person that I know.

Like Eminem said -- "Marshall with start shit-itis"-- except replace Marshall with Paula! =)

I don't know, maybe I should give him a couple more weeks, but you guys are right, he should be trying to give me exercises! "

" I agree that therapy can take time. And I also agree, if you feel you're issues are being ignored, or sugar coated, you may want to try another therapist. A good therapist will want to equip you with what you need for the day to day. Digging into the past can be helpful, but it's not all there is. Medication can play a key roll in your recovery. They sometimes need to be changed or the dosage adjusted. You need someone who will take your anxiety and how it's affecting you more seriously. "

" I did a full 12 week course of CBT some time ago, and it really did help. I still try to use some of the techniques now. Yes, I did exercises which were quite involved, really looking at my thought patterns and core beliefs, and then working on ways to challenge them. Also, as others have mentioned here, the breathing techniques, relaxation techniques and distraction techniques. There's a book you can get called 'Feeling Good' by David D. Burns. It's basically the whole CBT course in one book with all the exercises in it, so you can do them if and when you feel like. It took me a while to get through the book, lots of info in there to get through, but I really recommend it. Good luck! "
