My son has always had obsessive phases (washed hands and feet 50 times a day at age 5-7yrs)... but has done well since. He recenlty had a throat virus/infection and since is obsessed with thought of choking. HE WILL NOT EAT. Has been a month... several doc visits, 2 ER visits, tests to confrim nothing physically wrong and a hospital stay. He's gone from 82 to 72 pounds. He will drink.. but isn't enough to maintain his weight even. I'm lost. He is seeing his therapist. But.. something has to give. He is highly intelligent and fully understands the ramification of his choosing not to eat. I know he has OCD.. (my ex, his father also had OCD tendencies. Does anyone have any experience with how to convince this child to eat.... or with PANDAS (which i strongly think may have triggered this crisis). If neither.. prayers would help. My son is lost in his obsession. help.

" These are just suggestions, I am not sure they will work. I don not have personal experience with children.Check them out with your therapist.

I might try some soft food(jello banana) etc. See e.g if he can swallow one small piece of banana. Again, small successes are important. Once he gains a little bit of confidence you might be able to extend this further. Is you child old enough to take medication? I would consult with a psychiatrist. Here's a web link for some more information:

You might also be able to put meals in a blender and make them so they are almost liquid. This won't help the OCD but it will keep him alive.

OCD is hard with kids as their cognitive ability isn't fully developed yet. If possible try to let him know the risk of something bad happening is far greater from not eating than eating.

You'll be in my prayers.
Bob "

" Poor little fellow! Can you get him to drink milk shakes or Carnation Instant Breakfast? It tastes better than Ensure or other vitamin drinks. Will he not even eat his favorite foods? He needs to see a therapist for this before he ends up inpatient for it. "
