i do this everynight before i go to bed: make sure everything is firmly plugged in, there are no clothes or anything laying over cords, and nothing can be near the plug in. i get freaked out if anything looks wrong. my boyfriends mom has an air freshener/night light in the bathroom, it worries me to death when is stay there. I leave a fan on at night, and i have to make sure it wont tip over...i know exactly how you feel!

I usually unplug the toaster and coffeepot. I have a feeling my therapist is going to work on this though.

I would unplug the coffeepot too. I keep mine in a cabinet and I worry when it is in there even though there is no plug. The ocd says something could happen when it is not plugged in. I just need to remember, not plugged in, no electricity. I mean, stores sell things with plugs in the boxes and nothing happens.

THAT IS ME!! I read in an OCD book one time about a woman who was obsessed about making sure her iron was off. She would unplug the iron and take the pulg and press it into her palm until it made a mark. On her drive to work if she obsessed about it being unplugged she would look at the mark to reassure herself. A friend of mine said that sounds friggin psycho...and all I could think was...man that's a good idea! ha!

Hi, I'm new and yes, I have this problem. I have to unplug my hair straightener and my coffee pot or i feel like my house will burn down. There are times when I cannot remember if I unplugged them and I go home only to see that they have been unplugged.

About the iron. I ruined my candles bc I took them in my car when I went to my boyfriend's house who is over an hour away. They got dirty and another candle even melted, but that was in a glass jar. I would bring my hair straighter in the car too. I want to leave that in the closet, but I worry it will start a fire somehow. Obviously there it is not plugged in. It is that ocd. I also try to push the plugs that are not in completely and then I sometimes unplugg them, bc my hands were wet. (Didnt dry completely after washing them).
Anyone have any ideas how we can help get over this? I know to practice leaving things plugged in and leave the house for 15 mins and come back and make it longer periods of time each time.

lol, when I read the comment about the plug in the palm and pressing it in I thought "nice idea" too!
I dont have to unplug EVERYTHING (tv, alarm clocks, microwaves, etc.)...but a lot of things I unplug instantly, and I'm not just comfortable with the off switch, such as my hair straightener. It can't be near ANYTHING either that could touch it.
On another note, one day I had come into my room and found that my straightener fell behind something, and on its way down turned on and was on the carpet for TWO DAYS! The carpet was purple, and it had a ring of orange, green, and yellow from being burned. You could just imagine how I was when I found it!

Also, I will have to say out loud, to someone who is around me "You are turning off the straightener, the stove is off"
