How do you cope with recurring obsessions?

When I was seventeen I got this really terrible obsession, and it was what started to make me realize I had OCD. I let my thoughts spiral so out of control and snowball, I'll let myself believe anything. Like, I don't want to say it, but I *TRULY* doubted when I was 17 whether I did this really terrible thing when I knew, well, I wouldn't actually doubt if I did it! I argued with my thoughts all the time and then I talked to my family and a counselor, the obsession went away, but today I've been feeling really anxious. I had a lot of caffeine and just a little stressed and the obsession came back again. Does this happen to anybody else? Also, how do you guys cope with it? I find talking with my family and, of all things, playing video games (!), meditating, and just listening to relaxing music helps gets my mind off of it. Wow...just writing this all down has made me feel better. Anybody else?

" This happens to me alot. I'm a "pure o". My Dr. had me make index cards out to read when I was hit with an obsession. " I cannot trust my ocd feelings". "I would remember anything significant". Then write down one rational statement that goes along with whatever the obsession is at that time. "

" Wow, that's a really good idea! I've never thought about doing that. My counselor told me to carry around self-affrimations like that in my purse, something like that. "

" My counsellor also told me to write out a list of things to remember (eg. Is this a rational thought? or This is your ocd, and you can control it, etc.), then read the list anytime i got an obsession. It works sometimes but i still find it difficult to let go. "

" Recognizing it's OCD and then engaging in any other activity(especially if it involves active thinking) really helps. Videogames are one of my favorites also, as well as talking to others. "

" The sense that things are happening when they aren't is something I really wrestled with (and sometimes still do.) It's sort of delusional and it makes you feel crazy. I wrestle a lot with scrupulosity (the sense that God or demons or unseen forces are actively making me do or think things that I don't want to do or think. That I'll be judged for these things.) I try to remember that I don't have all the answers about God or about the unseen world and all of that, but it's a powerful thing. I like the idea of thinking about which thoughts you can trust and which you can't. I also exercise regularly and this helps for a while to ease the mental storm especially if I'm spiking. "

" all great comments and methods to reduce ocd...
also i find that ocd is more intense around any fears ,mental /phsyical stress, stimulants (caffeine etc)
Ocd seems to be more of an unhealthy "coping" with stress.
I agree with some of the methods of positve coping you mentioned like talking with family, games, meditation, writing, music etc
Yea,its all ok if u get stressed,anxious.
It's normal .It's just good to do something other than ocd. "
