During college I let myself go. I ate fried foods, sweets, and of course on a low budget you can't afford to buy fresh produce and you have no where to keep it in a dorm. I got married after college and didn't think that my eating habits would catch up with me. We ordered pizza often, and I often bought snacks, sodas, etc. almost nothing with any nutrition. My weight got up to 207 and I am 5'7". I was associating with friends who ate nothing but fries and drank beer with the fries. During that time my husband and I were trying to get pregnant. It was tough because I wasn't having normal periods and I knew my weight had something to do with it. I am a teacher so I finally had taken a full summer off and did not work or teach summer school. That summer was my lifesaver. I went to the local library and checked out several books on eating right and the book that really worked for me was "You: On a Diet" by Dr. Oz. I started on an organic kick, detoxifying my body and not eating anything with high fructose corn syrup or much sugar. In a matter of a few months, I lost 20 pounds. This past January, I found out I was pregnant! I have always feared that when I became pregnant I would gain 100 pounds. At almost 8 months of pregnancy I have gained only 15 pounds. My doctor said my weight gain was excellent...not too much, not too little. Its so good to hear that. How have I been able to keep it off? I buy so much fruit and keep it in the house. I refuse to buy junk. If I want a snack, its fruit, or walnuts, or pistachios. I love Kashi high fiber, high protein cereal. I also eat some yogurt. And I keep a lot of carrot sticks. If Im thirsty I drink V8 Fusion or water. I do have my cravings where I may get fast food at times, but as long as I eat high fiber, I feel good. I do believe that the more fiber you eat, the more you can control your weight. I love to watch TV shows on health, especially the show You are what you eat. It motivates you to eat well so that you dont end up obese. I owe my feeling well to that one summer I took off for me. I incorporated a lot of exercising then too, especially weights. If I can lose the weight, you can too. I was on a path of destruction until one day I woke up and said, I want to live a happy, healthy life. I want to be able to hike up a mountain if I wanted to. I want to be able to keep up with my kids one day and have energy for them. Start today. Go through your pantries and toss everything that is keeping you from moving forward. Replace it with fresh good foods that have the right nutrients to keep you alive. Your body is precious. Treat it well. Good luck to those suffering from obesity. I was obese and I hated to hear that word. Now I can say that I feel better than ever, even at 8 months pregnant! :)

Congrads on your accomplishments. I think it's wonderful that you have become so disciplined with your lifestyle...very very hard to do; especially as a teacher (I know).
A warning. Once your little bundle of joy comes into the world, please take time for yourself. Everyone says they will do it; but somehow it gets booted. Suggestion, while the baby is on a schedule; get yourself on one too..that is until things return to a semi-quasi normality state (like when your child is 10). As far as running up mountians and keeping energy, they still will outrun you. :-) I wish you all the best. Just remember after you become a mother, you still matter too :-)

Thank you so much for posting this. I am so encouraged to see people who are willing to take responsiblity for your weight gain. As well, taking the reigns and taking of control of a situation that clearly could have continued to spiral out of control.
Kudos to you and best of luck in your new journey of parenthood. I think it's wonderful that you'll pass on your new found happiness and lifestyle to your children!
