Going Back to Work

I was quite lucky to have most of the summer time off. Wouldn't it be nice to stay off lol. None the less I applied at a place that demands physical work. What is sad about this position is that there are some 70 year olds doing this job and are in better shape then me.

I have not been very active and just going up and down steps can be a slow process not to mention if I am on the floor on my knees it isn't easy to get back up mind you. Also my sleep schedule is way off base. I have got use to being up late and waking up when I please. I am not so sure this job will the right one for me as the shift is from 6am until 2 pm.

Anyway I am wondering what some of you have done when going back to work and still not in shape the way you want to be? Change of attitude of course on my part is necessary but it can be a lot easier saying it then doing it. Also I don't know about others but working in an office is just not my cup of a tea at the moment finding clothes to wear has been a nightmare. This job you can wear scrubs the one and only type of clothes I see out there that actually fit lol. None the less I am also wondering what are some of your fears going back to work when you are overweight and just generally not happy with yourself. Thanks Everyone and I hope you are all doing well!!:)

" I was very anxious going back to work after i'd put so much weight on. I just got up, took a shower, put my makeup on, did my hair, got dressed and went to work.

I think you'll find that the folks there don't know any different. Unless you wear a sandwich board that says "I hate myself"...they are none the wiser. Just make sure they don't see you scarfing down a steak hogie with a double milkshake for lunch...LOL...just a joke. But seriously...put a smile on your face and walk in like you know what you're doing. Do your job well, and they will respect you for the hard worker you are...at least this was my experience...I let my work do the talking:) "

" I think everyone is nervous about a new job whether they have weight issues or not. There is no magic cure to make you get up on time or anything. Just self discipline - don't go online or watch Tv before bed, always go to bed at a similar time, don't have caffiene after lunch time, etc.

Have hope in the fact that this firm has decided to employ you and spend their money on you - they must think you are capable of doing the job. Don't write off the job before you even start, this may be a self fulfilling prophecy and may affect your performance so you don't do as well as you could do. Don't see the 70s year olds as disheartening, see them as an example and hopefully the physical nature of this job may help you lose weight.

Is there any other job you could do? What do you enjoy doing or feel passionate about? Is there a job related to that? If clothes are a problem, why not take up sewing in your spare time and make your own? It will save money and the clothes will be totally individual and unique and fit you perfectly.

I do sympathise though. I am up for a new job (interview yesterday) which would involve lots of fetching in a 16 floor building. There are lifts but I dont trust them, they tend to break down, so I am a bit nervous about that. "

" I hear you on returning to work after you have been off for awhile. Every new job is stressful, I don't care if you are a size 4 or a 24; you just never know what to expect.

I'm not sure what profession you are going into (Sounds medical with the hours and the limit of fashion..scrubs) but there has to be something that you can do to make yourself feel good about you.

For instance, if you are forced to wear clothing that is less than flattering, do your hair differently every day. You could do your makeup to bring out special features in your face. To be honest, if you are working with the elderly; they might just be happy seeing a smiling face and knowing someone cares.

I think my biggest fear in doing my job was finding comfortable shoes that weren't ugly. (I'm a teacher). Yes, people still make fun of functionable shoes. :-) I also had fears of people watching what I eat. I know that sounds stupid, but true. I still most of the time eat in my office so, no-one sees me.

Perhaps focus on the positive aspects that are available to you. If you are out of there at 2...you still have how many more hours of daylight to do stuff? You have to work; make the best of it.
Good luck "

" Thanks for the great advice all:) I have not started the new job just yet as I am still seriously considering if I want it or not. My past work history has always been in management and medical field. I decided I wanted to get out of the being in charge, paperwork, and making decisons that effect many things. A job where you can just do your job and go home what a difference that would be lol.

Physically I am in terrible shape though. That is why I figured something that would challenge my body might be a good idea. The fears I have are more based on how much can I do in a 8 hour shift right now. I have slowly started to exercise at home to build up my strength but just not quite sure if I am ready yet. In saying that the challenge is not so much with the job as it is with myself.

As for sewing and making my own clothes well that is just not my thing lol. If you would watch me try and thred a needle you would know lol. None the less thanks for the tip Lizzi:) In some aspects it's almost like a battle to lose even 20 lbs to show I can do it. Perhaps then I would feel better about working any job. Anyone ever feel like that? As for jobs I feel passionate about well right now there are not any to choose from. My goal will be to open my own business hopefully at some point in my life. For right now I am more focused on changing the way I think and getting healthy again. Anyway thanks all for listening to my rambling as that does help me especially to see the advice and new ideas that you all give. Have a great day to all:) "
