Has anyone else developed a severe fear or phobia of hurricanes? I live in S. Fla and last year, a hurricane blew the roof off the building I lived in. We were w/o electricity for nearly two weeks and it traumatized me. I don't think I'd be soooo afraid if I had a lot more money and knew that I could reestablish myself but when you know that you are low income... plus, I have three pets, and there are very few shelters that allow pets. I know that if we were devastated from a hurricane and didn't have money to reestablish ourselves, then we'd be out of luck as the Red Cross won't help you unless you give up your pets. We don't have many friends or family in this area so it really is awful.

" I've developed severe fear of hurricanes...Frances was the bad one for us...I have family here also and feel I have to save them all if something should happen...some are older and are stubborn and never leave when the authorities tell them to so I stay here to...I would never leave any of my family behind. " After surviving Andrew, I have a fear of anything to do with thunder and rain. Now I just take a Xanax when its a really bad storm and hide in the laundry room....Silly, but it calms me. "

" Im a Katrina survivor and was there during and after for two weeks... I dont have a fear so much of hurricanes, then again I live in Califrnia since that time. I do however have strange triggers such as helicopters flying over because they were rescueing people and dropping them off right near me and they were constantly flying over, and when the air feels a certain way or there are really high winds like we get in california with the santa anas i have flashbacks... " I have lived in the gulf coast area of the south.I have been through a lot of bad hurricanes.I used to be afraid but iam not afraid anymore.Iam more alert to tornados than hurricanes. With hurricanes you have time to prepare and think out a plan. With tornados you do not know until they arrive and do their damage.
I find that prayer gives me peace about hurricanes.I get a plan together and prepare but constantly pray for my family, friends, and all the others in its path.
I know many do this but personal prayer is what I am mostly speak of.A time between me and god alone. He gives a deep sense of calm and fear is not part of my life anymore. "

" Hello,

There are a lot of organizations that are helping with pets with the Red Cross. Call your local red cross and ask for info. You could have their phone numbers handy if you ever needed it. It would be helpful to have their records on hand with any med info for yourself with prescriptions number, pharmacy numbers, etc.

I have lived in Tx for 12 years and Ocala fla for 6 years so i know what your feeling. If you inform yourself about how to prepare ahead of time it may ease you a little. And if there is a hurricane make sure to find the shelters and have a plan for securing your house.

Pets are a great way to know ahead if there is a tornado coming. You probably don't have a basement so the saafest is to get into the bath WITH a matress over you and the pets. I've seen many times where this has saved the people.

If your fear is really bad you may think about relocating. I know that is hard. My cousin lives on A1A in Jacksonville so when i respond to disasters there I always worry about him.
Good luck if you want to write please do... "
