Hi, I have been diagnosed with Narcolepsy for almost a year now, I have Cataplexy, Hallucinations, Awfull super vivid dreams, And EDS but no sleep attacks. My sleep study showed the Inconsistent Rem sleep pattern of a Narcoleptic and I thought it was actually somewhat common for people with narcolepsy to not have sleep attacks but I'm starting to notice that it's not. So I was just wondering if other have Narcolepsy with no sleep attacks and if I should wonder if i even have it at all.(Which I'm pretty sure I do because of the cataplexy and the sleep studys, I just think the no sleep attacks thing is wierd.)

" Hi Ashley
Your symptoms sound identical to my sons. He also has the vivid dreams which I feel border on night terrors. You say you suffer with EDS, but no sleep attacks. My son has EDS, but as long as he is doing something he can manage to stay awake, but as soon as he sits down, he will be gone. He does not drop suddenly to sleep, but given the opportunity, there is no stopping him.Is this the same with you? "

Thank you, It's nice to know I'm not the only one who doesnt have sleep attacks "

" Hi,
It sounds like you have narcolepsy to me. I don't have sleep attacks as in drop on the floor asleep. I get very sleepy and feel the need to sleep as soon as possible. I think the presence of cataplexy is usually a big indicator. I get all the same symptoms as you. Once I sit down and sleep that's it, nothing is going to wake me. The meds I take control the cataplexy. "

" i too am the same, i get terribly sleepy but i can keep from going to sleep if i am active. I can do normal things like amusement parks etc...but when i get in the car to ride home i am out. I too have vivid dreams, but they are not terrors. I can just tell you exactly down to the detail what happened. So what is the difference between a sleep attack and just everyday EDS that comes and goes? "

" hey there, you are far from alone. I very rarely have sleep attacks, but get cataplexy attacks about 5 times per day if i don't manage things right. I have the vivid dreams, sleep paralysis and the hullucinations. Life is so much fun when you have narcolepsy isn't it lol "

" Hi there,
If you have cataplexy and it has been actually confirmed, you do have Narcolepsy. Cataplexy is the one exclusive symptom of Narcolepsy. Therefore in answer to your question, you can have Narcolepsy without sleep attacks - but do remember that as time goes on, it is very possible that you might experience such attacks to some extent. Not all symtoms of Narcolepsy show up at the same time. Hope this helps. "

" Ashley you say you suddenly get horribly sleepy out of nowhere, they are sleep attacks. Some of us are slightly better able to stop actually going to sleep if we have to eg. when driving, especially if taking provigil, but that overwhelming desire to go to sleep is a sleep attack, basically i bet if you're in a position to go to sleep, you'd go right off yes?
