The last couple of times I went swimming my legs became partially paralyzed and I had to be helped out of the pool.
I was wondering if anyone else has that problem. My neuro wants me to do water exercises and I am planning on Sunday. He said it could be the water temperature or I was just doing to much. Posted on 09/26/07, 08:09 pm |

You neuro makes good points. I swim in an assessible pool with several assistants in the pool. I remember once swimming on my own. My results were like yours for the same reason. You have to learn your limits and watch the clock. I limit myself to approx 40 minutes.
'This' is a change.

I found out that I had to swim only in very cool pools. If the temps got much higher than 82 degrees I would fatigue very quickly and would need to sit a very long time under a cold shower before I would be able to drive home. The best pools seemed to be those where swimmers trained.

try a rowing machine, just the lower body part. no impact but a nice ms excercise, don't forget the calves, and keep a count of your reps, I'm sure you'll want to do it again.

OMG! I had this happen to me and it scared me so bad I was afraid to go back to the pool. While in the water I felt great. Almost normal, then when I went to get out, I couldn't get up the three little steps to get out. I had to have my husband get my son out of the pool and then drag me out. It was so scary, but that's what people said to me from my support group. Exactly what goosetip said is right on the money.

OH IF U CAN GET IN THE WATER I HIGHLY RECOMEND IT. THE MS SOCIETY HAS A SWIM PROGROM THAT STARTS IN OCT TAKES A BREAK FROM DEC 2 JAN AND THEN GOES ON 2 JUNE. THE WATER IS TEMP AT @ 82-84 DEGREES PERFECT AND THERE IS AN INSTRUTOR THAT HELPS US WITH THE WATER EXCERSISE...I LOVE IT AND THIS POOL I GO 2 HAS A BOTTOM THAT CAN BE ADJUSTED 2 HOW DEEP U WANT THE WATER. THEIR IS A LIFE GUARD AND HELPERS IN THE WATER HELPING THOSE THAT NEED HELP GETTING INTO THE POOL. THERE IS A RAMP SO U CAN GET INTO THE POOL EVEN IF U R IN A CHAIR.

Tw5 you might want to reconsider the swimming. You may have had a case of swimmers ear or water stuck in your ear. That happened to me my first time back swimming recently. I looked up swimmers ear on the internet and finally figured out how to get the water out of my ear. Then you might try wearing ear plugs when you swim. Just a thought. Even if you figure you can't swim in the conventional way it is still a great place to get excercise.

When I was growing up, you couldnt get me outta the water. I loved to swim, loved being in the water. Constant motion, it was great fun. A handful of years later I am in my new neighborhood and decide to go to the community pool for a swim. Damn would that feel good again! So I check out the pool on where would be a great place to start, and give myself a second and dive right on in. So I'm in the water and going towards the bottom like I'm supposed to, no problem. Then I went to move so I could turn right back up and swim, but much to my shock, my body...NOTHING worked. My arms were locked, my legs and feet were locked. Heated pool too. I floated to the top, it was all I could do. I worked my way to the side of the pool somehow with a frightened life guard at my feet nearby, watching the whole scene, ready to dive in andn help where they thought I needed it. I was pulled out of the water. I just sat there for what seemed forever. I have no idea what happened.
That was an isolated incident but it scared me enough that I dont try to swim like I once did. I love being in a heated pool, where I get in gently, and walk around gently, the water being up to my chest and all...feels good. But I can burn out too quickly energy wise and all just by one walk lap too. I have to pace myself gently. Hope water/swimming works well for you. Go for it, enjoy it! I'm rooting for ya Hugs Ellen
