B12-Synthesis of myelin sheath

Many people with MS seem to have Lack of B12 and Vit D. This blog is to look into the lack of B12.

http://www.healthline.com/adamcont...
This link states that a metabolic problem of lack of Vit B12 can cause nerve damage.

---------
TEST
The BEST indicator or B12 deficiency is to ask your doctor to run a test to find out what your MMA (mehylmalonic Acid) levels are. If they are elevated you most probably have lack of B12.

B12 What it does:
Vitamin B12 works WITH folic acid in many body processes including SYNTHESIS of DNA, red blood cells and the insulation sheath (the myelin sheath) that surrounds nerve cells and facilitates the conduction of signals in the nervous system. Severe depletion manifests as pernicious anemia, which was invariably fatal until the discovery of B12 in liver. But long before anemia sets in, other conditions may manifest, most often neurological problems (numbness, pins and needles sensations, a burning feeling in the feet, shaking, muscle fatigue, sleep disorders, memory loss, irrational anger, impaired mental function and Alzheimer’s) or psychological conditions (dementia, depression, psychosis and obsessive-compulsive behavior).

B12 HELPS
1.)Produce melatonin which HELPS you sleep
2.)Useful adjunct for diabetics
3.)Have been helpful for those with Asthma(sulfite sensitivity), eczema, psorsis, osteporosis, Lupus and MS.
4.)Plus Low B12 resutls in Low antibody response, impaired immunity and increaese in infections (MS viral/bacteria cause??)

B12 & MS
One condition that would seem obviously correlated with B12 deficiency is multiple sclerosis (MS), a disease characterized by demyelination of the central nervous system. Yet many studies indicate that those with MS have normal blood levels of the vitamin. Japanese researchers have found that in MS patients, there is a decrease in the binding capacity of B12, thus inhibiting the transport of B12 into the cells, even in patients with normal levels in their blood. Even so, they were able to achieve some improvement with high-dose supplementation.
The benefit of B12 for depression may be due to B12’s ability to activate a substance called tetrahydrobiopterin (BH4), a compound which in turn helps activate "feel good" neurotransmitters like serotonin and DOPAmine.

How to GET More B12 + Stop the loss of B12
1.) Eat Liver or shellfish (High in B12). Steak is good but get it on the rarer side as it preserves more of the B12.
2.) Eat Calcium such as Unpasteurized proteins help B12 absorbtion so does Bone broths that heal intestinal inflam. and increase absorption.
3.) Take coconut oil and consume lacto-fermented foods: these help fight against pathogens such as helicobacter pylori, which is associated with B12 deficiency. Eradication of the organism often clears up B12 deficiency.

AVOID
1.)AVOID OVERconsumption of foods that BLOCK vitamin B12 intake or increase the body’s need for the vitamin, such as SOY foods and spirulina.
2.)Antacids and drugs that lower stomach acid levels: acid-suppressing drugs such as Tagamet, Zantac and Losec can lead to serious B12 deficiency
3.) Foods fortified with folic acid. Taking folic acid withOUT B12 can mask signs of B12 deficiency in red blood cells but will not protect against deficiencies in the nervous system. Folic acid and B12 WORK WELL TOGETHER and any supplementation program should include BOTH of these nutrients (Institute of Medicine.National Academy Press. Washington, DC 1998).
4.)Avoid taking EXCESS vitamin C(normal amount fine), especially for long periods. The ability of vitamin C to destroy B12 has been observed by several researchers--although this is disputed by others. Small amounts of natural vitamin C are a better choice than large amounts of synthetic vitamin C.
5.) Avoid smoking, vaccinations containing thimerosol (ie flue shot) that contain mercury & oral contraception which all deplete B12
6.) Avoid mycotoxins made by molds that interfere with B12 functions. As well as pesticides and xenotoxins.

Since vitamin B12 in supplements is produced in exactly the same way as B12 in nature, that is, by bacterial fermentation, the danger of high doses in most cases is negligible.

" You can do what you want but I am asking my husband's nutritionist to do all of the tests listed under DS/Neuropathy group/ Photos at the bottom of the page.
** Whatever you do discuss it with your DOC.

____Name of Test___
1 Cystadane HydroCloride Test or Betaine HydroChloride Capsule Test" - This is not a lab test but you can get capsules to "retain" your stomach to produce a normal amount of acids.
2 Intrinsic Factor (IF) Blocking AB test -produced in stomach and IMPORTANT for digestion

3 Trypsin (enzyme that digest protein) determine if you are producing enough pancreatic enzymes
4 Trypsinogen - Immunoreactive Trypsin when low detects pancreatic sufficiency (per www.labtestonline.org)
5 Urea breath test or stool test for Helicopter Pylori(HP) or Helico Pyloric - HP can cause infection in esophagus, stomach and dueodenum which could affect absorption.
6 Hydrogen breath test- tests if there is a bacterial overgrowth in the small intestines which can affect absorption (intestines have both good and bad bacteria).

*Total Protein & Albumin/Globulin ratio (TP and AG ratio for R-Protein)
7 Total Protein only
8 Albumin
9 Immune Globulin Panel – A. G, M
10 Thyroid Globulin & Antibodies,
11 Thyroid Globulin Panel – Quantitative panel

*Quantitative levels of Testosterone/Estriol
12 Radiologist – Bad Estrogen (Note: They did NOT have test for Estriol but if you subtract Total Estorgen by Estradiol you should get Estriol.)
13 Estrogen
14 Testosterone (only if you are a man)

* Overall blood workup on vitamins and minerals in the body including: B Vitamins:
15 B12 and Folic test (or you can get tests 16 +17)
16 B12
17 Folic
18 B2
19 B6
20 B1
21 Vit D1 & D25 (D panel)
22 Calcium
23 Urinary Methylmalonic Acid Test

*Mineral test of Cu, I, Mn, S, Se, Zn, etc
24 Copper
25 Magnesseum
26 Selinium
27 Zinc
All these test (except #1, 3, 4, 6) cost $2600 BEFORE insurance. So for us I think we have 80% coverage we should have to pay $600.

I do NOT know if this is a complete list. Please do your own research and consult a physician.
Getting ANY absorption issue corrected helps your overall health and would be good to do even if it does NOT “fix” MS.

-Best Wishes to you "

" Reply to Lump- YES it has pineapple with digestive ensymes + nuts that are full of omega3 and B complex vitamins (natural kind).
Although I do not know if the dehygration, processing of pineapple affects digestive enzymes. "

" HONESTLY I am NOT looking for someone to say "THIS IS IT"..NOPE I am trying to get information like this seems to fit OR for this Reason it does NOT seem to fit. I want to pursue the TRUTH. Following anything else will not help my husband or anyone else.

I found out something else today. I knew when you exercise you make your pH more acidic which gut bacteria hate. Need them for absorption. Today I found out that if you get Arterial Blood Gas test that gives you levels of HC03 Bicarb(regulated by kidneys) and C02 (regulated by lungs). If your kidneys are NOT functioning properly then your lungs over compensate and you get lower pH(acid)-> killing gut bacteria->less absorption. Something else that upon investigation makes sense with this theory.

I wonder if you drank like 1/2 teaspoon baking soda in an oz of water and slammed (drank fast) before aerobic exercise(walk fast, run) if this would pos effect MS symptoms (lessen them due to keeping your body more base/alkaline)? Again this would only help if it is gut bacteria that is your problem (or one of your problems)

ANYBODY ever done this?

No matter what I SINCERELY wish you all the best. "

" I am not ignoring you, EP. I have read and thought about all your findings and will incorporate them into my health plan as I see fit. I do think LDN is regulating many of these issues as it helps with so many intestinal diseases. I am adding sublingual B12 (which my hubby has wanted me to do for years) as a result of this info.
I'm afraid there is no way anyone could make me go to a nutritionist or have a bunch of tests done unless I was very sick. That's just the way I am--I think I know more than they do, I guess. Just stubborn, my husband would say. As it is, if I did not have MS, I would be healthy, as not just any old horse--BIg Brown, maybe. "

" It's funny that this article is here. One thing that anyone considering adding B-12 or Vitamin D should do first is go to either their primary physician or their neurologist and get their blood tested first. I'm telling you this now, my neurologist would not recommend the B-12 shot for me as I was not lacking in any of the B's. I am however taking Vitamin D and not becuase of my MS, but becuase of my last bone scan. Please don't run off and start taking medications or treatments without first consulting your PCP or Neurologist, because quite frankly it's just dumb. "

" Calamitybb- can NOT agree with you more. What we are doing is GOING To neuro and then a nurtitionist to have TESTS conducted to FIND out IF my husband has an absorption issue. This issue may be with his kidneys,(reg blood pH ->too acidic(low pH) gut bacteria don't thrive->less absorption->worsening of MS symptoms ???

I need answers and am ASKING medical professionals to do the test necessary to ANSWER my questions.

(NOT necessarily a exact B12 or Vit D issue this is just where my Absorption theory was initiated.) "

" Hi--I've been seeing an internist who also does natural/vitamin therapy. He put me on the following supplements: Vit D 1000mg/day, grape seed oil 200mg twice daily, omega 6 and omega 3 fatty acids--1 tsp/day, twice daily multi vit, flax seed oil three times daily, crfanberry supplement 3 times daily, probiotic 3 times/week..
This has helped so much.
He alkso prescribed a cumin oil and raspberry seed oil supplement. but I seem to get pretty stuffy after I take it. He wants me to take DHEA-makes mew break out, and Estriol--I've hesitated on the estriol as I am Factor V Leiden positive....Bottom line is these things have helped and I am feeling good. "

" See this is JUST the thing why do those with MS have to be put on such MEGA doses of vitamins??? My kids and I eat the same as my husband..we don't have to take mega doses NOT to have MS! The only reasonable reason would be if he is not absorbing or processing his nutrients correctly.

I can not wait to see what his test come back like. FYI we have split the tests up. So we will take 15-28 and 2-3 other tests. If these all come back fine will do the rest of the tests. Figured we could save some money on it. Sounds logical and then at least I know we have not OVERlooked this as a possibility. "

" Per another topic I asked about in the last day or so.

I am also going to add tests for sodium and Potassium.

I want to find out IF there is an imbalance in these levels that might be contirbuting to the nerve fatigue (nerve impulses are use primarily chemical process with these ions). "
