Many people with MS seem to have Lack of B12 and Vit D. This blog is to look into the lack of B12.

http://www.healthline.com/adamcont...
This link states that a metabolic problem of lack of Vit B12 can cause nerve damage.

---------
TEST
The BEST indicator or B12 deficiency is to ask your doctor to run a test to find out what your MMA (mehylmalonic Acid) levels are. If they are elevated you most probably have lack of B12.

B12 What it does:
Vitamin B12 works WITH folic acid in many body processes including SYNTHESIS of DNA, red blood cells and the insulation sheath (the myelin sheath) that surrounds nerve cells and facilitates the conduction of signals in the nervous system. Severe depletion manifests as pernicious anemia, which was invariably fatal until the discovery of B12 in liver. But long before anemia sets in, other conditions may manifest, most often neurological problems (numbness, pins and needles sensations, a burning feeling in the feet, shaking, muscle fatigue, sleep disorders, memory loss, irrational anger, impaired mental function and Alzheimer’s) or psychological conditions (dementia, depression, psychosis and obsessive-compulsive behavior).

B12 HELPS
1.)Produce melatonin which HELPS you sleep
2.)Useful adjunct for diabetics
3.)Have been helpful for those with Asthma(sulfite sensitivity), eczema, psorsis, osteporosis, Lupus and MS.
4.)Plus Low B12 resutls in Low antibody response, impaired immunity and increaese in infections (MS viral/bacteria cause??)

B12 & MS
One condition that would seem obviously correlated with B12 deficiency is multiple sclerosis (MS), a disease characterized by demyelination of the central nervous system. Yet many studies indicate that those with MS have normal blood levels of the vitamin. Japanese researchers have found that in MS patients, there is a decrease in the binding capacity of B12, thus inhibiting the transport of B12 into the cells, even in patients with normal levels in their blood. Even so, they were able to achieve some improvement with high-dose supplementation.
The benefit of B12 for depression may be due to B12’s ability to activate a substance called tetrahydrobiopterin (BH4), a compound which in turn helps activate "feel good" neurotransmitters like serotonin and DOPAmine.

How to GET More B12 + Stop the loss of B12
1.) Eat Liver or shellfish (High in B12). Steak is good but get it on the rarer side as it preserves more of the B12.
2.) Eat Calcium such as Unpasteurized proteins help B12 absorbtion so does Bone broths that heal intestinal inflam. and increase absorption.
3.) Take coconut oil and consume lacto-fermented foods: these help fight against pathogens such as helicobacter pylori, which is associated with B12 deficiency. Eradication of the organism often clears up B12 deficiency.

AVOID
1.)AVOID OVERconsumption of foods that BLOCK vitamin B12 intake or increase the body’s need for the vitamin, such as SOY foods and spirulina.
2.)Antacids and drugs that lower stomach acid levels: acid-suppressing drugs such as Tagamet, Zantac and Losec can lead to serious B12 deficiency
3.) Foods fortified with folic acid. Taking folic acid withOUT B12 can mask signs of B12 deficiency in red blood cells but will not protect against deficiencies in the nervous system. Folic acid and B12 WORK WELL TOGETHER and any supplementation program should include BOTH of these nutrients (Institute of Medicine.National Academy Press. Washington, DC 1998).
4.)Avoid taking EXCESS vitamin C(normal amount fine), especially for long periods. The ability of vitamin C to destroy B12 has been observed by several researchers--although this is disputed by others. Small amounts of natural vitamin C are a better choice than large amounts of synthetic vitamin C.
5.) Avoid smoking, vaccinations containing thimerosol (ie flue shot) that contain mercury & oral contraception which all deplete B12
6.) Avoid mycotoxins made by molds that interfere with B12 functions. As well as pesticides and xenotoxins.

Since vitamin B12 in supplements is produced in exactly the same way as B12 in nature, that is, by bacterial fermentation, the danger of high doses in most cases is negligible.

" So I have been doing some more researching... no where near done.

However, I have some preliminary tests I am looking into. I am trying to get information on how much these cost. I think a nutritionist or General Prac. can order them.

Right now these are the tests Iam looking into.. might be necessary to find out about what my husband is absorbing, etc.

1.) "Heidleberg Capsule Test" - tests HCL in stomach
Low tech approach to stomach acid issue is Betaine Hydrochloride.

2.) Intrinsic Factor (IF) Blocking AB test - Tests if IF produced in stomach is in balance

3.) Urea breath test or stool test for Helicobacter Pylori(HP). - HP can cause infection in esophagus, stomach and dueodenum which could affect absorbtion.

4) Hydrogen breath test - tests if there is a bacterial overgrowth in the small intestines which can affect absorption (intestines have both good and bad bacteria).

5) Total Protein and Albumin/Globulin ratio (TP and AG ratio) - If there is a problem in the results the probable cause is a protein absorbtion problem. It goes to R-protein levels ( R4 and R1 most prevalent and are pepsin sensitive).

6) Quantitative levels of Testosterone and Estriol (thx Kay for the specification of a Quantitative test of the hormones not just a general test as I would have asked for).

7) Overall blood workup on vitamins and minerals in the body including but not limited to the following:
B Vitamins: B1 - Thamine, B2 - Riboflavin, B3 -Niacin, B5 - Pantothenic Acid, B6- Pyridoxine, B12- Cobalamin
+ Folic acid, calcium, vit D.

8) Urinary Methylmalonic Acid Test - If this is not in balance then there is a B12 issue.

9) Mineral test of Cu, I, Mn, S, Se, Zn, etc

I have not come across any tests that give you exact B12 levels in cells, #8 is as close as it gets. I have not seen a tests that shows exact pepsin levels either. As well as a test for GOOD bacteria count in the intestines. If you see anything in regards to exact tests for these subjects let me know.

I also have not found exact costs attached to these tests. I am still looking into this too. If you get any information let me know.

Otherwise..IF you want you could look into getting these tests. THEN PLEASE let me know what your results are and as always whatever you do ... do it under medical supervision.

As for us I would like my husband to NOT only get his MRI and liver enzymes checked this week (annual physical) but get the above tests too. Worst case scenario they don't find anything and he is no worse for wear.

BTW HAPPY MOTHERS DAY TO ALL! "

" I had someone ask me directly in a message. "If they find out what's wrong" will they be able to DO anything about it.

This is NOT the first time someone asked me a question like this so I'll post my answer.

If you have these tests and your particular issue is breaking down the B12 in your bloodstream into a coenzyme then you should be able to talk to your doc about getting the mythl coenzyme directly to BYPASS this problem. If the issue is getting the B12 into your bloodstream to begin with then you could get b12 injections. If your problem is stomach acid imbalance see test #1 low tech solution that is supposed to "retrain" your stomach to have the proper balance of acids. IF your problem is an infection in the intestines you should be able to get medication to get rid of it. If you need more good bacteria you should be able to take probiotics or digestive enzymes to help absorb ALL nutrients. The issue in some might be that they get the B12 but not other nutrients to UTILIZE the B12. Kinda like you have lots of pizza crust but not much sauce or cheese for a pizza. You can have 6 crusts but only sauce and cheese enough for 1 pizza..then you ONLY get one pizza. If you have B12 but not the ingrediants (ie too low estriol count or testosterone that breaks down into estriol)to utilize B12 YOU STILL have a B12 utilization problem. If you know the missing ingrediant (ie low testosterone) theoritically for many of these issue you just get more of the missing ingrediant. Either by resolving GI(stomach) imbalances or DIRECTLY adding it (ie B12 injections). Some of these hormones, vitamins, probiotics, #1 tablets are pretty inexpensive.

Again, this is all under the premise that this THEORY is correct. Talk to your doctor about these tests and ask them if there is any HARM in getting a blood draw, urine specimen or breath tests. If NOT then why CAN'T they do it for your piece of mind. Even if these tests show no problems.. at least I'll be able to sleep at night knowing I found out the answer. Instead of Wondering if in 10years they'll figure out it was an absorption issue. At this point, for me, I just have to know..one way or the other. "

" The Myelin Sheath you are referencing is the Nervous System... You're talking about the "autonomic nervous system" The autonomic nerves do not absorb like they should.. wheater it be vitamins, causes GI problems... etc. Go look up the topics that are related to "Autonomic"

Go to this site for more information AND to post your topic again.

" Hello Petite P,
I am glad you added your comments as I want to welcome an open discussion on this theory that a problem in the absorption chain may keep body from repairing itself in the autoimmune disease MS.
(see Replies 43, 63, 65)

However, I would suggest you read some of the information on the below links.

http://www.sciencedirect.com/scien...
Clinical study "concluded that B12 deficiency may cause autonomic dysfunction"
Study was in the Journal of the Autonomic Nervous System.

http://www.nutrition-malnutrition....
Look under B1 - can affect autonomic system... info on other B complexes, etc

Thank you for your input. "

Rethinking & Clarifying the Vitamin B12 Issue
-By Dr Vivian V. Vetrano

"The most common basic cause of a natural cobalamin deficiency is a failure to digest, absorb and utilize the various cobalamins from food and from the intestinal tract as in the case of gastritis or gastroenteritis. The cause of malabsorption is commonly a gastrointestinal disorder and this was known by pathologists way back in the l800s."
Article says if you take suppliments they may not be in a form that is usable to your body.
Plus in my line of thinking while you may address part of issue ultimately you need enough of the good gut bacteria to absorb other nutrients. I am eczema parent because I was in this group first. I helped my son clear up about 85% of his eczema in a week! I did this with probiotics(the link I used to come to this conclusion is listed in Eczema Group). I believe now he ultimately has an absorbtion problem. I am not sure if his blood pH is too low(acidic) for his bacteria to grow ...but something is off in his biochem because I have to keep giving him the probiotics. If I miss a few days it gets bad again. If his system was in balance I would not have to keep giving him extra bacteria.

Conclusion: Ding.Ding..Ding I think the crediablity to my THEORY keeps stacking up.
( : I almost have my complete list of tests and costs for them done. I will post them under MS/subgroup Neuropathy/Click "Photos & Videos." I will also post a crude picture of the absorption chain as I have research(AGAIN I am NOT a medical professional so please take this info to a doctor/dietitian if you are interested in getting these tests) "

" Spoke with someone today on DS that did not know that as you age you produce less digestive enzymes and hormones (ie estrogene) that mean you absorb less nutrients.
See below site that restates this with clinical studies
FYI Pineapple has LOTS of the natural digestive enzymes in it! ( :
