B12-Synthesis of myelin sheath

Many people with MS seem to have Lack of B12 and Vit D. This blog is to look into the lack of B12.

http://www.healthline.com/adamcont...
This link states that a metabolic problem of lack of Vit B12 can cause nerve damage.

---------
TEST
The BEST indicator or B12 deficiency is to ask your doctor to run a test to find out what your MMA (mehylmalonic Acid) levels are. If they are elevated you most probably have lack of B12.

B12 What it does:
Vitamin B12 works WITH folic acid in many body processes including SYNTHESIS of DNA, red blood cells and the insulation sheath (the myelin sheath) that surrounds nerve cells and facilitates the conduction of signals in the nervous system. Severe depletion manifests as pernicious anemia, which was invariably fatal until the discovery of B12 in liver. But long before anemia sets in, other conditions may manifest, most often neurological problems (numbness, pins and needles sensations, a burning feeling in the feet, shaking, muscle fatigue, sleep disorders, memory loss, irrational anger, impaired mental function and Alzheimer’s) or psychological conditions (dementia, depression, psychosis and obsessive-compulsive behavior).

B12 HELPS
1.)Produce melatonin which HELPS you sleep
2.)Useful adjunct for diabetics
3.)Have been helpful for those with Asthma(sulfite sensitivity), eczema, psorsis, osteporosis, Lupus and MS.
4.)Plus Low B12 resutls in Low antibody response, impaired immunity and increaese in infections (MS viral/bacteria cause??)

B12 & MS
One condition that would seem obviously correlated with B12 deficiency is multiple sclerosis (MS), a disease characterized by demyelination of the central nervous system. Yet many studies indicate that those with MS have normal blood levels of the vitamin. Japanese researchers have found that in MS patients, there is a decrease in the binding capacity of B12, thus inhibiting the transport of B12 into the cells, even in patients with normal levels in their blood. Even so, they were able to achieve some improvement with high-dose supplementation.
The benefit of B12 for depression may be due to B12’s ability to activate a substance called tetrahydrobiopterin (BH4), a compound which in turn helps activate "feel good" neurotransmitters like serotonin and DOPAmine.

How to GET More B12 + Stop the loss of B12
1.) Eat Liver or shellfish (High in B12). Steak is good but get it on the rarer side as it preserves more of the B12.
2.) Eat Calcium such as Unpasteurized proteins help B12 absorbtion so does Bone broths that heal intestinal inflam. and increase absorption.
3.) Take coconut oil and consume lacto-fermented foods: these help fight against pathogens such as helicobacter pylori, which is associated with B12 deficiency. Eradication of the organism often clears up B12 deficiency.

AVOID
1.)AVOID OVERconsumption of foods that BLOCK vitamin B12 intake or increase the body’s need for the vitamin, such as SOY foods and spirulina.
2.)Antacids and drugs that lower stomach acid levels: acid-suppressing drugs such as Tagamet, Zantac and Losec can lead to serious B12 deficiency
3.) Foods fortified with folic acid. Taking folic acid withOUT B12 can mask signs of B12 deficiency in red blood cells but will not protect against deficiencies in the nervous system. Folic acid and B12 WORK WELL TOGETHER and any supplementation program should include BOTH of these nutrients (Institute of Medicine.National Academy Press. Washington, DC 1998).
4.)Avoid taking EXCESS vitamin C(normal amount fine), especially for long periods. The ability of vitamin C to destroy B12 has been observed by several researchers--although this is disputed by others. Small amounts of natural vitamin C are a better choice than large amounts of synthetic vitamin C.
5.) Avoid smoking, vaccinations containing thimerosol (ie flue shot) that contain mercury & oral contraception which all deplete B12
6.) Avoid mycotoxins made by molds that interfere with B12 functions. As well as pesticides and xenotoxins.

Since vitamin B12 in supplements is produced in exactly the same way as B12 in nature, that is, by bacterial fermentation, the danger of high doses in most cases is negligible.

" Gotcha! I agree with you, Lump, that LDN is the key to getting all these physical systems working right. Of all the things I have done right and wrong since my DX (most of them my own ideas and with no medical support), I think this is the best. "

" I'll get to the point, MS is an autoimmune disease that for 25 years has not been cured under the THEORY that the immune system is attacking the myelin sheath around your nerves. However, no ONE factor that causes your immune system to become “overactive” has ever been found. Current drugs do not halt progression of the disease.

I think it is time for some other THEORIES to be thrown into the ring of possibility. I think that it is quite possible that this autoimmune disease is a vitamin ABSORPTION problem.

Lets look at some data
Estriol(good estrogen) seems to be helping SOME women with MS. http://www.sltrib.com/health/ci_88...
They do NOT know WHY??

High Dose Naltrexone has been used for heroin addicts by taking away the high you get from the heroin in HIGH levels 50mg. However, Low Dose Naltrexone (LDN) was studied by Penn State University on Crohn's disease. Patients did not have any adverse blood workups but IMPROVED by 89%. An Penn State is also studied LDN on mice with disease like MS with “spectacular” results per Ian one of the researchers (publication coming out in Montreal this fall 2008). NO one knows WHY???

May 2000 study on RA and NIAH 2004 study of RA both point to the fact that the immune system is prematurely “aged” and that current immune inhibitor theory may have “missed the boat” per the 2000 study. I have links on these if you can't find them.

Now lets look at some other data:
Many people I speak to that have MS have B12 or D deficiency. I know this is not a clinical study but go with me on this theory that started at this point of data. What does B12 do? It helps synthesis myelin sheath. So if you have an ABSORPTION problem with this vitamin or once in your body you can not break it down into one of 2 necessary coenzymes you can NOT repair myelin. IF you are deficient enough in B12 it damages the myelin all on it's own.

Knowing all of this lets re-approach the above data.
Per the University of Utah Physiology department Estriol is a requirement for B12 absorption.
LDN was studied by Penn State University on Crohn's disease. Patients did not have any adverse blood workups but IMPROVED by 89%. Repairing the GI track is key to better ABSORPTION of ALL necessary vitamins needed to use B12, including Vit D, Folic Acid, Calcium, etc.

If you are getting some B12 you might be able to get by until an “outside agent” such as a cold bug comes and does damage to your body which at this point you can not repair. IF you get hardly any B12 at ALL then you will steadily loss function because the shear lack of this vitamin does damage to your nerves. This gives and plausible explanation to WHY some people are remitting/relapsing while others are primary/secondary progressive.

THIS THEORY explains everything. Yesterday when I came up with this theory I was very intrigued by it. However, now that I keep looking at the problems and finding this fills in many of the holes I am getting... VERY EXCITED by this.

It also may explain some other autoimmune diseases where maybe another vitamin is not being absorbed causing another part of your body not to be repaired ie joints in RA. "

" So your hypothesis would be B12 deficiency inhibits synthesis of myelin; problems with intestinal absorption leads to B12 deficiency; LDN improves intestinal functioning; therefore, LDN should improve MS by facilitating myelin repair. "

" Im sorry i did not get back to you..smile..and during our conversations i did not mention i think that i do get a b-12 shot twice a month..ouch..grin.. have been ever since the test..and will have to continue for life apparently..sigh... unfortunalty i still have the tingly feeling though not to as much of a degree as i did before getting the b-12 injections and no longer have to use my asthma inhaler in the last 2 years..smile...so yes i highly recomed that anyone in doubt...actually anyone with MS..should be getting a full blood workup to check all their levels to see if they are defficent in any of the viatiems etc... anything that can help will help...

thx again Ecezma...smile

and p.s. lumpc1...i am pleased to announce that Ecezma also found me an artice that announced that LDN was finally approved for use in Canada as of April 14th or around there it received final FDA approval..grin..so now we await the Dr.s and Neuro's to be trained on it and start using it..and we are home free...that is what i was trying to explain to you before hon...although there was one drugstore over here that may have made it..it was not approved...sigh

hugs

" *Big SMILE*
IF this THEORY is correct then YES this should help a good deal of people. However, I thinkg the reason for some people being RR vs SP /PP is that other mechanisms..POSSIBLY B12 not being able to be broke down into a coenzyme therefore NOT allowing hardly any B12 through to be used to repair the myelin may lead to a slow and steady decrease in functioning of PP patients.

Again just my THEORY and I am not a doctor. "

" Ok I am now speaking to some doctors about specific tests that can be done to find out about the vitamins at the cellular level.

MMA may NOT be the proper test. If anyone emails me I will NOT be able to give yuo more info until I am given sometime to research this further.
PLEASE be patient and I'll get right on this. A few more people need to call me back.

Please keep posting any info you may have on this topic.
THANK YOU "

" I think I should clarify something too. OVERdosing on vitamins is NOT good to do. It CAN do damage. What you are looking for is the problem you can't absorb/breakdown a vitamin(s).

Again as soon as a find out about the types of tests to look into I'll post them. "

" From government fact sheet on vitamin B12:

"What is the health risk of too much vitamin B12?
The Institute of Medicine of the National Academies did not establish a UL for this vitamin because vitamin B12 has a very low potential for toxicity. The IOM states that "no adverse effects have been associated with excess vitamin B12 intake from food and supplements in healthy individuals" [7]. In fact, the IOM recommends that adults older than 50 years get most of their vitamin B12 from vitamin supplements or fortified food because of the high incidence of impaired absorption in this age group of vitamin B12 from foods that come from animals [7]."
