B12-Synthesis of myelin sheath

Many people with MS seem to have Lack of B12 and Vit D. This blog is to look into the lack of B12.

http://www.healthline.com/adamcont...
This link states that a metabolic problem of lack of Vit B12 can cause nerve damage.

---------
TEST
The BEST indicator or B12 deficiency is to ask your doctor to run a test to find out what your MMA (mehylmalonic Acid) levels are. If they are elevated you most probably have lack of B12.

B12 What it does:
Vitamin B12 works WITH folic acid in many body processes including SYNTHESIS of DNA, red blood cells and the insulation sheath (the myelin sheath) that surrounds nerve cells and facilitates the conduction of signals in the nervous system. Severe depletion manifests as pernicious anemia, which was invariably fatal until the discovery of B12 in liver. But long before anemia sets in, other conditions may manifest, most often neurological problems (numbness, pins and needles sensations, a burning feeling in the feet, shaking, muscle fatigue, sleep disorders, memory loss, irrational anger, impaired mental function and Alzheimer’s) or psychological conditions (dementia, depression, psychosis and obsessive-compulsive behavior).

B12 HELPS
1.)Produce melatonin which HELPS you sleep
2.)Useful adjunct for diabetics
3.)Have been helpful for those with Asthma(sulfite sensitivity), eczema, psorsis, osteporosis, Lupus and MS.
4.)Plus Low B12 resutls in Low antibody response, impaired immunity and increaese in infections (MS viral/bacteria cause??)

B12 & MS
One condition that would seem obviously correlated with B12 deficiency is multiple sclerosis (MS), a disease characterized by demyelination of the central nervous system. Yet many studies indicate that those with MS have normal blood levels of the vitamin. Japanese researchers have found that in MS patients, there is a decrease in the binding capacity of B12, thus inhibiting the transport of B12 into the cells, even in patients with normal levels in their blood. Even so, they were able to achieve some improvement with high-dose supplementation.
The benefit of B12 for depression may be due to B12’s ability to activate a substance called tetrahydrobiopterin (BH4), a compound which in turn helps activate "feel good" neurotransmitters like serotonin and DOPAmine.

How to GET More B12 + Stop the loss of B12
1.) Eat Liver or shellfish (High in B12). Steak is good but get it on the rarer side as it preserves more of the B12.
2.) Eat Calcium such as Unpasteurized proteins help B12 absorbtion so does Bone broths that heal intestinal inflam. and increase absorption.
3.) Take coconut oil and consume lacto-fermented foods: these help fight against pathogens such as helicobacter pylori, which is associated with B12 deficiency. Eradication of the organism often clears up B12 deficiency.

AVOID
1.)AVOID OVERconsumption of foods that BLOCK vitamin B12 intake or increase the body’s need for the vitamin, such as SOY foods and spirulina.
2.)Antacids and drugs that lower stomach acid levels: acid-suppressing drugs such as Tagamet, Zantac and Losec can lead to serious B12 deficiency
3.) Foods fortified with folic acid. Taking folic acid withOUT B12 can mask signs of B12 deficiency in red blood cells but will not protect against deficiencies in the nervous system. Folic acid and B12 WORK WELL TOGETHER and any supplementation program should include BOTH of these nutrients (Institute of Medicine.National Academy Press. Washington, DC 1998).
4.)Avoid taking EXCESS vitamin C(normal amount fine), especially for long periods. The ability of vitamin C to destroy B12 has been observed by several researchers--although this is disputed by others. Small amounts of natural vitamin C are a better choice than large amounts of synthetic vitamin C.
5.) Avoid smoking, vaccinations containing thimerosol (ie flue shot) that contain mercury & oral contraception which all deplete B12
6.) Avoid mycotoxins made by molds that interfere with B12 functions. As well as pesticides and xenotoxins.

Since vitamin B12 in supplements is produced in exactly the same way as B12 in nature, that is, by bacterial fermentation, the danger of high doses in most cases is negligible.

" So here are a few of my thoughts. MS is thought to be the result of viral/bacteria agent that "messes up" immune system.
What if you have a mold or GI track "issue" that blocks absorbtion of vitamins INCLUDING B12 which helps synthesis myelin sheath.

Factors that can inbibit absorbtion of B12:
R-Protein
Intersic factor
pancreatic enzymes
Coenzyme Methylcalamin
Coenzyme Adenosylocobalamin

My THEORY that body pH when too low(acidic) keeps the GOOD bacteria from thriving. You NEED these bacteria to help absorb ALL nutrients including B12. Reduced stomach acid (due to in part more processed foods & more sugar)per these articles also leads to lower absorption and lack of B12, etc. B12 works WITH Folic acid which is in folic acid found in green veggies.. something lacking in our country.

Maybe we should be seeing nutritionalist to find out if for DIFFERENT reasons People with MS are UNABLE to ABSORB and Use Vitamins (ie 2 CoEnzymes are need to transport B12 to cells AFTER absorption).

Your thoughts!! "

" True.. that might be one cause for some people.

For B12 to be utilized U need: Eat B12 in Unpasterurized milk(good luck getting this), liver, shellfish, red meat on the more rare -med/rare PLUS you need to eat spinich, broccoli.
Then you need enough stomach acid (too much due to too much sugar & processed food so people take antiacids that BLOCK B12 absorbtion)
Need balance of R-Proteinthrough CoEnzymes listed in Reply#1

Plus you need to avoid molds and Pesticides that block absorption and Reduce antibody response impairing the immunity allowing infections (viral/bacteria to get by.

Might this be one possible THEORY as to the disorder of MS??

Anybody been tested for MMA level, molds, and above Five factors (r-Factor through CoEnzyme Adenosylocobalamin)???

This THEORY may explain why no ONE factor has been found. Differnet people of problems with Absorption OR utilization (ie transport of Vit to cells) of vitamins REQUIRED to REPAIR your body.
WOW I think this might be something.

I NEED input "

" If you read first meassage of this blog "B12 & MS" the LAST sentence shows how B12 activates DOPAmine.

Is this a possible connection to something like a product like LDN that works with opids (NOTE LDN should NOT be used by anyone taking painkillers it will cause your GREAT pain).
B12 helps repair myelin sheath so does LDN help B12 in some way?
Seems like anything that would help B12, etc would help repair MS damage.

Any thoughts?? "

" YA all kind of thoughts. I can tell you long ago in a land far away, I got a Dr. to give me dopamine, it worked real good in the early stages. Also Hydregene works big time. I think this could be a major key. I always feel better for a couple days after eating liver, for years I have known that. I just don't get to it, I need too, me thinks. "

" Might be something to this.
B12 is blocked by glucaphage used by some diabetics which IF this THEORY is right might add to the MS symptoms!

Could it be this simple??? Even if it is ..its not REALLY simple because MS (and other autoimmune diseases) could be people not eating right. OR for MORE people..they eat right but have a range of issues that block either the absoprtion/ use of B12 & other vitamins(transport to cells for use). IE antiacids that blcok vitamin absorption..seems like Probiotics in yogurt ads say 90% of Americans suffer from bowel issues. If you have bowel issues or using antacids your not getting enough vitamins to REPAIR your body. Depending on the blockage you'll have different vitamin deficincy leading to a particular part of your body NOT being able to repair itself.

PLEASE write we need more information like what lump has written.. by more people. We need more data. "

" Seems to me many of use are on fish oil, Vit D which allow for better absorption of Calcium needed for B12.
A cascade effect that can be blocked by "the weakest link"

Have asked a med prof. their advice on what are the best tests for the factors that may inhibit absorption of B12.
Have any of you been to a nutritionalist.. we have not..YET! Any sggestions on tests other than the MMR.

Seems like a good idea to have a general workup of vitamins in your body as well as a MMR. If one of these come back lacking then look into what the "blockage" may be.

**** Osteoporosis and Essential Fatty Acids
Osteoporosis is a growing concern with postmenopausal women due to its prevalence in 75 year-olds and older and the disability and even mortality it can cause. Although EFAs have not been talked about much in relationship to this disease, there is a growing body of evidence and research to warrant our attention. EFAs have been shown to increase calcium absorption from the gut, in part by enhancing the effects of vitamin D, to reduce urinary excretion of calcium, to increase calcium that is deposited in the bone and improve the bone strength and to stimulate the synthesis of bone collagen.(1) Other findings have demonstrated that patients with osteoporosis who are given fish oil show an increase in serum calcium levels, and others given a fish oil/evening primrose oil combination had increased osteocalcin as well as an increased procollagen, all suggestions that these supplements may enhance bone formation. " I don't know... my B12 has always been in the proper range, so is my folic acid.

I still only take B1 100 MG, not sure if I should be taking other costly items, but I like keeping things simple. "
