The following is an abstract of an article in the Journal of Immunological Medicing:
Epidemiological data suggest the notion that in Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is an acquired autoimmune disease and the cause may be an environmental factor(s), probably infectious, in genetically susceptible individuals. Several cases of viral induced demyelinatimg encephalomyelitis in human beings and in experimental models as well as the presence of IgG oligoclonal bands in the cerebrospinal fluid indicate that the infectious factor may be viral. However, the absence of a specific virus identification in MS central nervous system may hardly support this notion. On the other hand, the partial response of patients with MS to immunosuppressive and immunomodulatory therapy support the evidence of an autoimmune etiology for MS. However, the autoimmune hypothesis shares the same criticism with the infectious one in that no autoantigen(s) specific to and causative for MS has ever been identified. Nevertheless, the absence of identifiable infectious agent, especially viral does not rule out its presence at a certain time – point and the concomitant long term triggering of an autoimmune cascade of events thereafter. Several concepts have emerged in an attempt to explain the autoimmune mechanisms and ongoing neurodegeneration in MS on the basis of the infectious – viral hypothesis. Important words to note from top: suggest, may be, probably. We are dealing with an unproven theory supported by some evidence but not scientifically valid as yet. Posted on 05/06/08, 02:05 pm |

They don't know a whole lot, do they?
In 100 yrs, out kids will look back and be aghast at what the medical community did not know. Just as I'm aghast at what they did not know or what they believed was the case in the '30s.

Yes, and they will be shocked at what poisons we allowed doctors to give us in the hope they might help.
A documentary on chemo on PBS a couple of weeks ago was eye opening on how little they know. Shots in the dark.

I heard a theory that bone marrow transplants could help. I don't know if they actually tried it but I was a little shocked. Sometimes it seems like the "specialists" are just as clueless as we are.

Until they know what causes MS, 100%, they have to go on theories. No way of being sure which is right. I guess you have to choose the one you think makes sense and go with it, as far as the way you choose to treat it.

Here is the beginning of an article on THis is MS website:
This is a fascinating new study that concludes that MS may not be an auto-immune disease after all... "A new view of multiple sclerosis (MS) may arise from the first extensive study of brain tissue from the earliest hours during a bout of the disease. The results...suggest that the earliest event is not, as previously believed, a misguided immune system attack on a brain substance called myelin... Instead, the first event appears to be the death of the brain cells that produce myelin, triggering a subsequent immune system mop-up operation to clean up the cells and the myelin, said author John W. Prineas, MBBS, of the University of Sydney in Australia... The results could have significant consequences for MS research, much of which is focused on understanding why the immune system attacks myelin. The focus may have to shift to understanding why the myelin-producing cells begin to die."
