Hello everybody!
It's been a while since I've been here, but I couldn't think of a batter place to find out something: I have a team of people that I'm doing the MS walk on Sunday in Chicago, and I'm in the process of making t-shirts for all of us to wear. The idea I came up with was a "Top Ten Reasons Having MS Is Awesome" shirt, and came up with ten things that I HOPE people will laugh at. What I'm also concerned with is not offending anybody, which usually wouldn't bother me, but I want to play nice on Sunday. I, myself, do have MS, in case you were wondering. So I'm putting them up here for anybody to give their opinion on. Please let me know: 1) Is it funny? 2) Do any of them offend you? and 3) Do you have any that are even better that I could add? All comments are appreciated, so don't hold back. Thanks and be well! Top Ten Reasons Having MS Is Awesome 10. Get rock star parking with your new handicapped license plates. 9. Get to walk around with a snake head cane without looking like an arrogant tool. 8. Have as many track marks as a heroin junkie without having to go through rehab. 7. Never get tired of hearing “But it doesn’t look like anything’s wrong with you.” 6. You haven’t lived until you’ve woken up from a solid good night’s sleep of 9 hours, ate breakfast, and then settled in for a 4-hour nap. 5. 2 words: brain cloud 4. Built-in excuse for not going to the in-laws. 3. All the symptoms of alcoholism, but without having to commiserate with barflies. 2. Get extra sympathy every time the Jerry Lewis telethon is on TV. 1. Finally, a reason to watch Montel! Posted on 05/02/08, 11:05 pm |

I agree with Texas... This would be a great shirt to have! Also, "Built-in excuse for not going to the in-laws or anywhere else you don't want to go!" Honestly, I use it all the time! LOL xoxoxo Cj
Nice to "see" you John!

Don't forget my favorite..."I get to watch Law and Order reruns over and over as if they were brand new!"
You have a great list, and I can't see how anyone would be offended. Of course, if you'd like one that is, I'm in! LOL! In fact, I'm going to get started right now! Ahh...inspiration! LMAO! XOXOXO

Freddie, really? You're offended? I know we all have bad days, bad weeks even, but for me personally, if I can't laugh at this disease, it becomes much more powerful. It takes up too much space in my life...that's why I LOVE laughing about it.
I'm sorry you you were offended, I wish we could help you smile.

Freddie - I am so sorry you were offended. At the point when I was first diagnosed, I didn't see any humor at all in this disease either. But, as time moves on, I realize that it is a part of me and I can best deal with it mentally with some humor. I have seen things that people view as humor that also offended me and people have said things to me that offend me but I choose to look beyond it and realize that person is either in a lot of pain with their own MS or they were trying to help and didn't know what to say. In this case though, I saw nothing offensive at all and I actually enjoyed the chuckle. Without sounding critical, because I truly don't mean it to be - I hope that a day comes when you too can also find humor and lightness in the darkness and reality of MS.

I want to thank all of you for your feedback. And Freddie, your response is just as important as all the ones supporting me. While I, too, would hope you that you will be able to laugh at this disease some day, you have every right to handle it any way you see fit.
But, having said that, I have decided to go with the shirt. My general feeling is that 90% of you or more have responded positively and, I would suspect, those that are feeling a little angrier at MS will probably not be at the walk. I'm going with the shirt as is but for one change: I'm going to replace the brain cloud one with Margie's suggestion about MS being easy to spell. I wanted to put the suggestion in about what you can say to your in-laws, but I think I'll save that for next years' "Top Ten Things You Can Say to Your In-Laws When You Have MS" shirt. Keep those suggestions coming! And Texas, I like your idea. Hopefully, I'll have found my calling and be able to raise tons of money for research with the t-shirt idea. Be well!
