I'm new to MS (Diagnosed in last 30 days), I didn't ask and my doctor didn't mention anything, but can I still drink beer like always or does alcohol affect MS? I'm not an alcoholic or anything, but I'd still like to be able to go out drinking every now and then. Thanks

" I haven't read any medical reports that say you cant drink but given that alcohol affects the nerves it would be sensible not to go overboard. I have heard that a binge may cause a flare up.
I do know that I need far less now to get tipsy! "

" You also have to take into consideration the meds you are, or will be on. A drink every now and then I think will not be to harmful, but to just go out and get plastered will probably cause some problems. Always ask your doc or check drug interaction with alcohol. And please be careful. "

" I would have to agree, like with anything else watch alcohol with any meds. As it's said....Drink in moderation don't go overboard. Had a few drinks over the holiday, didn't notice a big effect. Here again with this great curse we bear called MS...everyone is affected differently. "

" I actually asked my neuro as well as the Rebif nurse this question...they both said that as long as it's social drinking that it shouldn't be a problem. That said, guess it's all in your definition of social drinking ;) So far no problems, though I do notice I get sleepier than I used to when I do have a few. Welcome to DS! Diane "

" Hi! I think it's okay to drink in moderation. The only possible problem is that any balance and coordination problems you have will become even greater with even small amount of alcohol. Otherwise, it really is no big deal. Enjoy! "

" I never changed my drinking habits, and I was 19 when I was diagnosed. I definitely had my party days and I never found any connection between my boozing and my MS. Then again, when I had MS symptoms, I wasn't out partying. But when I was feeling good, I was having fun. Oh, the fun days of university, before the mortgage and the responsibilities... "

" I had 3 gin & tonics (normally, a good buzz and still gonna feel good the next day) but, when I got off my chair, I almost fell. My girlfriend had to help me out of the bar! I fell right before we got to the car. I had this vertigo feeling, and my legs just disappeared...I got sick on the way home (I never get sick from a few drinks)from the vertigo, and I figured I was slipped something, but we were sitting at a table with all of our friends, and I never left my drink unattended. The following Sunday I woke up with double vision, which led to my diagnosis...I was afraid to drink for a few months, but have since indulged. Rebif nurse said a few drinks here and there is fine. Just know your limits :) Apparently mine is 3 gin & tonics ~ha,ha "

" I guess I'm opposite of all the other posts. I drink and feel better. Sx go away. So I'm the desingated driver lol. My dr told me to quit because of the meds. They affect the liver. But I didn't. Moderation yes - that's a given. "
