Problems with walking?

Do a lot of you have problems with walking or does it come in spurts? When I get hot, my walking gets worse. It actually looks like I am drunk and for the people that don't know I have MS I am sure I look like I am drunk!

" Currently my walking is impaired. Not terrible...but my legs feel weak and at times my left leg feels like a huge charlie horse is in it. I was in the ICU a few weeks ago and this is how I came out...I think it may be from laying in a bed for 4 days...yuck! "

" Early in my disease process I would have trouble walking -- but only occasionally. In fact, what got me to the doctor was that I kept falling for no reason after playing sports and being physically active/agile my whole life.

Now, my walking is quite impaired, with my right side worse than my left. On stellar days, I can still use a cane in the house or studio. But most days, I'm using a walker because of the weakness and tightness in my legs. It's a symptom I've accepted, but never really gotten used to.

And yes -- increased body temperature, whether due to a fever, exertion, or a hot day, makes everything worse.

" I have problems with my coordination while walking..yes! But due to my obsessive cardio and weightlighting I thought I was just sore from the gym. But I did have a bad fall and really hurt myself...it was this fall and a few other symtoms that make me think ....is something wrong? Today I work very hard on my leg strength but still find it alittle challenging at times to walk. I just push forward and do the best I can. "

" Yes I too have problems with walking. I am now in Physical Therapy which is helping to a point. She has taught me to walk heel-toe and that has helped. I feel really stiff in my right leg most of the time. I also will use a cane or if I will be walking alot will use my wheelchair. "

" Everything you read here is right. Corny, but they are all textbook reactions! As is the 'drunk' appearance. For me, everything here describes me. Wait for summer. Oh yeah, my left leg stiffens in winter. Doesn't give me much time to relax.. welcome to MS. "

" Yes, I have problems with walking. My legs get extremely weak, stiff, spastic and painful or else I can't feel them at all. I fell part way down the stairs on New Year's Day when my right leg just went out on me. I try walking the track at the YMCA which I used to just speed around and it's like in my head I'm cruising, but my legs don't want to listen. It's very frustrating and upsetting. I keep hoping this is just a flare up and they'll be back to near normal soon. "

" Rather than risk being thought drunk, I use A cane. Sometimes it is a rest as well. I walk into town (about 1 mile or to the commercial district about the same). I don't do it when it is Hot or icy but it does give me a matter of independence.
