Hi, I am new here and I have BP and am wondering if it's possible to suffer from both DID and BP? I feel like I have I don't know who I am and there are people in my head watching me and talking. I am there is one person who is really promiscus and wild, and one who is quiet and reserved and one who is really religious. I forget things sometimes, like where I've been and what I've done, not a lot but what do you guys think? Is it all the BP?

" I am both, so I hope so!!! LOL!

Most DID suffers probably also have other mental and physical ailments, just because of the severity of the trauma they've been through. I also have fibromyalgia, IBS, PTSD, (which all DID's have, but an entity in its own), and a few other things I probably have but haven't a diagnosis for.

WHat you describe here all sounds like DID symptoms.

bipolar disorder is extreme mood swings, with episodes of depression and mania...not just strong feelings, but uncontrollable and relentless experiences that are only held at bay with a specific kind of medication. If you'd like my info about BP, just messg me and I'll send you a copy. "

" what happens is i have all these people that I am...my quiet resereved self, my promiscious self, my really religious self - all these people watching me in my head, telling me to adapt to this person or that situation. I even change my voice sometimes when i talk. It's like i step back and can see myself and what i'm doing. I don't lose time or anything but it just seems like i don't have an identity, a single one. " I have been diagnosed with both and a few other things to boot -- ptsd, ocd, panic disorder, anxiety disorder, ADD, probably more. who can remember?

They are just labels. THe more there is the more tangled up everything seems to be and the work to undo it is ampliphied but it is still posible to reach an equilibrium -- to be centered and whole.

I am well on my way there. It takes yoga and meditation, therapy and medication. I recommend you try them all and more to find what works for you. "

" I was just talking with my new therapist the last time I met with her, about not having a sense of "self" -- who, and what, is that? she helped me figure it out. But I know what you mean, it's like split ends. "

" The experience of feeling like you’re watching yourself is called depersonalization, and that isn’t uncommon in PTSD and DID. It is also very typical for someone with DID and to a lesser degree those with PTSD to have several incorrect diagnoses before the correct one is made. It’s partly because the ‘self’ is not a cohesive whole, as Starfish said they lack a sense of self. Some, and I’m one of them, use the correct personal pronoun but often feel it’s false because they are unsure of who ‘me’ is. I recall an early experience of depersonalization, I was about 9, perhaps younger, looking at my hand and asking my mother what am I? She was taken aback and didn’t understand my question, she responded that I was a little girl and I said I knew that but what am I? I was unable to articulate what I was talking about and recall feeling terrible, it was as if “ I “ had become unmoored and was adrift in space, although I was not hallucinating, I knew I was standing right there talking with her but inside I felt completely lost. That was perhaps the most dramatic of my experiences with it and for decades I could not talk about it without the feeling overwhelming me again.

As for losing time not all people with DID lose time, and among those who do it varies, even within the same body – I can’t say ‘person,’ because there are many splits, or alters if you want to use the technical term. Some have what is known as co-consciousness, where the alters and core are aware of and usually can communicate with one another. From what you’ve described I imagine that may be what’s happening. If you didn’t say ‘my religious’ self I might wonder if there was some other pathology but it seems that you are clear about it being you and an internal process. Some people with DID are fearful and even misdiagnosed with schizoaffective disorder (a combination of symptoms of bipolar and schizophrenia) or schizophrenia. The reason is the voices they often hear, but in a psychotic illness like schizoaffective or schizophrenia the voices are typically outside the head and usually have no discernable location.

And to complicate it further people with DID can have alters who have a mental OR physical illness that is not shared by others within the system. My supervisor told me about an article she read in some learned medical journal about a patient who presented at the ER with dangerously elevated blood sugar. When staff attempted to administer insulin the patient said she was not diabetic. Sure enough a blood test confirmed her statement, her blood sugar was within normal limits. This happened twice, and the physician was puzzled so the second time he drew the blood and tested it himself, same result. The patient presented with elevated blood sugar but when she said she was not diabetic sure enough it was normal. I’ve heard similar stories, particularly vision changes with DID and know of no scientific explanation for it, but very little is known about DID. Some mental health professionals continue to question its validity, and I include myself in that group but for me it’s more a matter of denial so my opinion doesn’t count!

I’d suggest you talk with your therapist, assuming you trust him or her about it. A good resource for finding a therapist who specializes or at least has training and interest in the disorder is ISSTD. I found my therapist through them and he is amazing. I’m glad you found this group, it is a great place, quiet sometimes but someone will always respond with caring and support.
