In my experience there doesnt have to be a particular reason. For some like one of my protectors he uses the name of ym dad as we saw my dad as being protective of his family. All of my internals have chosen their own names. Was interesting when I was first encouraged to think of the possibility of having DID, that a dozen individuals just screamed out their name one at a time. That was one interesting experience let me assure you

I think DID is a very individual issue. We have some alters who refuse to take names so that there is no way to identify them, so that no one can call them out so to speak. Anononimity(sp?) is it's own form of protection. Those that have names usually have some reason for chosing their name that a perceptive therapist might pick up on and get lots of clues on our history. The phrase "what is in a name? That which we call a rose would smell as sweet by any other name" definitely does not apply to us.

i think is becuase we make names for the personor persons that become part of who we are and our lives. it depends i think also, how much they are apart of our daily living and such like that, if they interact with others or are just a part of home life. depends on the person too.

your alters are individules.even with their own heart rate an blood pressure.names make them feel like they're important, and they are important.they helped you survive.

My husband does not have names for his alters. Instead we have titles. Like therapist, doctor, or good ole boy. There are a few proper names we use : of course his name: Jeff and JT. JT is a mix of a lot of them. It would make it easier if they were named that way I could address them as individuals.

My husband's have names, too. Two of the names were chosen by their guarded (the OW), one was chosen by my husband, and the newer ones seem to be naming themselves. It helps me to keep them straight--I guess they just went by numbers before I knew about them?

All of us have our own names because we all consider ourselves different people with slightly different memories and in some cases, radically different hopes and dreams. One of us wants to be an astronaut when he grows up, another is an artist, and so on.

We also all have different names, lately ones who are 'announcing themselves' have requested my assistance in choosing a name and they have wanted something with a Christian meaning of some sorts. It allows them to feel special and important, only 4 of mine have names associated with a certain period of time in the life of the body.
