A case of alcohol *improving* coordination

Published Story by hollie

http://msnews.acceleratedcure.org/...

An article in the Archives of Neurology describes a man with MS who developed a tremor [75] in his hands and neck as part of his disease.

Even though disease-modifying therapy helped with other functions and reduced the man's relapses, the tremor persisted, and wasn't even affected by tremor-targeting drugs. Then the man discovered that ingesting alcohol dramatically improved his tremor.

For example, the man required two hands and his chin to stabilize his pen to write a very wobbly note, but after drinking a 12-pack at a party, needed only one hand to write a much more legible note.

Another study has reported that ethanol improves the gait of people with essential tremor, and suggested that alcohol might bind to receptors involved in the disease pathology. It's strange to think that a substance that normally impairs coordination (especially in 12-pack quantities!) would improve it in some cases.

" Once when my brother was in town we went to the bar of a busy restaurant nearby so he could catch a tennis match on a cable station - not a situation I'd normally put myself in mind you, as I'd gotten to the point that public outings were having a noticeable effect on me, I'd get self-conscious & all stiff & just be miserable.

I drank one of those fishbowl-sized schooners of icy beer, which of course made me need to pee [this was before the cane] & I'm wondering 'Oh fudge, what was I thinking?' Well, the trip to the bathroom on my own was pretty smooth compared to how I walked into the place, & now I get it. "

" In a weird way, this makes a bit of sense. IF the "suppressor" nerves are the ones affected and a person uses a mild sedative -- alcohol -- to slow down some of the excitatory nerves which aren't being balanced by their suppressor cohorts, it might balance the system somewhat. "

" I usually do not drink that often, but every once in awhile I will have a few drinks and feel wonderful. I sleep well and the next morning I am so happy to have NO PAIN or stiffness!. After I have been up for a few hours reality returns and so does the pain. It feels so wonderful to have no pain and you feel you can take the world on. So you get ready and go someplace only to have all the pain and stiffness re-appear therefore having to cut the outing short. (sigh) "
