A case of alcohol *improving* coordination
Published Story by hollie http://msnews.acceleratedcure.org/... An article in the Archives of Neurology describes a man with MS who developed a tremor [75] in his hands and neck as part of his disease. Even though disease-modifying therapy helped with other functions and reduced the man's relapses, the tremor persisted, and wasn't even affected by tremor-targeting drugs. Then the man discovered that ingesting alcohol dramatically improved his tremor. For example, the man required two hands and his chin to stabilize his pen to write a very wobbly note, but after drinking a 12-pack at a party, needed only one hand to write a much more legible note. Another study has reported that ethanol improves the gait of people with essential tremor, and suggested that alcohol might bind to receptors involved in the disease pathology. It's strange to think that a substance that normally impairs coordination (especially in 12-pack quantities!) would improve it in some cases. [75] http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed... I have noticed this effect also. But not with 12 beers! Wow. I find a couple of drinks seems to act as a muscle relaxent for me, the spastic legs relax a bit and the shakey hands become more stable...but its a fine line between that and becoming too drunk to function.

Hi Kelly,
I've been saying this the whole time. I find it very intresting you posted this. Mind u I don't make it a habit but when I had no health insurance or any drugs. alchol was a god sent for me. The funny things for me is I'm drunk 24/7 with MS sx. I drink and I get straight. Not only with sx but I literally get straight!

Okay I had a bad cold this week. So I took Nyquil. 5days later I had more strength in my leg to lift it. Do you think it was alcohol in Nyquil. I never drink wonder if alcohol does ease our nerves.

Well, it's a CNS depressant, so if a nerve is in spasm etc, I suppose it might calm it down.
I know before I had my TN diagnosed, it was the only thing other than ice that gave me any relief.

Wow - strange that this appears today. We had some wine at a friends house last night and I said the same thing. I felt a lot better! The tremors in my hands and arms went away but it is back to normal this morning.

I have always felt that a glass of two of wine and or vodka have made me feel better and the spascity decreases. It has been awhile since I have drank a 12-pack think but depending on one's toleance towrds alcohol it may be helpful. I have noticed that when I have consumed alot of alcohol I find myself as expected drunk and unaable to function properly.

Morning All,
Annie - my hubby was just saying maybe a glass of wine each day would help. Going to try it. Hope you feel well today. Thanks!

I went to my best friends birthday party one day after getting discharged from the hospital. Not the best idea but i wasn't going to let anything stop me from seeing her on her birthday. I was shaking and having tremors, most likely from all the steroids. Two jack and cokes later and i felt NORMAL. This would usually make me buzzed but i felt completely sober and the shakes had gone away.
