Has anyone had an EMG?

I have 2 appointments booked for next week, one with the top neurologist for the movement disorder clinic at UBC, and the other for the metabolic disorders (neuromuscular clinic) for the EMG Lab.
I think I will cancel the EMG Lab appt, I have had that where they stick those needles into your muscles years ago when I lived in Florida and I swore then that I would never have that done again. I really dont even know why I was referred there, I thought they did a history and some detailed blood work, but now I found out different. I am usually pretty good at tolerating most types of pain, unfortunately this is not one of them. Has anyone else had this done, and how did you find it to be? Posted on 05/08/08, 08:05 pm |

I had a few done. One on my arms and hands. Didn't like the pain in the fingers. Ouch! but not that bad. Last EMG was done in legs, I didn't feel anything which was good but bad because the last time they did it I did feel the pain.

I had one done, and I asked my NL if I could borrow it for when my husband got out of line.

I think I had this done, but I don't recall the needles. EMG sounds very, very familiar though. I was told that it would be somewhat painful, but it wasn't at all. I believe that it was done to measure leg function. The neuro. herself did it and she only did one leg as apparently the leg with the numb foot tested okay so she didn't see the reason to do the 'good' leg. Anyway, I was pleasantly surprised for once, that a test didn't hurt. Just felt somewhat funny and my leg kept jumping whenever she added the electricity (?). I thought it was interesting. Maybe it depends on who does the test? There are people who can give shots nearly painlessly and those who nearly kill your arm or leg. So quite possibly the pain or lack of pain depends upon who does the test. Hmmmm....
Michelle I'd have it again if my neuro. thought it was necessary.

If your a baby so am I that was the worst test I have ever done..it was worse then the spinal tap they did on me!!!! No one even told me what the test consisted of and after no one told me maybe not to get up right away. When I got up to get dressed my legs were completely numb and I fell and hit my back and my head.. I was extremely upset!!!!!

I HAD A SERIES DONE IN FEBRUARY WITH MY NEUROLOGIST. IT IS NOT THE MOST PLEASANT EXPEREINCE~BUT WHAT TEST IS??? IT IS AN IMPORTANT DIAGNOSTIC TOOL FOR THE NEURO DOCS TO RULE OUT OTHER CONDITIONS THAT CAN MIMIC MS. I ALSO HAD EVOKED POTENTIAL TESTING WHICH IS A BIT UNCOMFORTABLE AS WELL ON THE ARMS, LEGS, AND BRAIN. THE VISUAL POSRTION WAS NOT PAINFUL. BUT THAT IS WHERE THEY PICKED UP A SLOW REACTION TIME THAT ULTIMATELY LED ME TO A NEUR-OPTALMOLOGIST THAT DX'D OPTIC NERITIS.
THESE ARE IMPORTANT TESTS AND EVEN THOUGH UNCOMFIRTABLE...IF I HAD IT TO DO OVER~I WOULD IN A HEARTBEAT. GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR DECSION.
