" All I can add is a few things that helped me. First I worked on cutting down a little each week for a month. Had tried a few times before so that I had practice. Each time I lasted longer. Tried hypnosis which did absolutely nothing except make me determined not to have wasted the money. "

" lump, I've gotta argue the point you made about cold turkey being the worst way to go, sorry, but part of the reason that quitting that way worked for me was the realization that this legalized/non-prescriptive DRUG that we happened to SMOKE, instead of take with water or inject, could create such a physical reaction in my body when I was not using it. I needed to have a clean break that was painful, eye-opening and shattering to my own sense of invincibility. For smokers like me, if it's too easy to quit, it's just as easy to start again. The memory of my withdrawal stays with me to this day and keeps me from starting up again. "

" I've tried to quit a few times with no luck. I used the patch for weeks, stopped for weeks and then...started back. I want to stop but, just don't know how. Stopping cold turkey scares me and now that I've read lilMargie's response, I'm even more scared. "

" MsSux, just remember: nobody every died from QUITTING smoking. Being brave means to face your fear. I got up from the recliner after a couple of days and did great, it was just like I had the flu and the third day, the toxins were almost gone from my body (it takes a full two weeks). It was the best & smartest thing I ever did. My way might not be how you should try to quit - you should try lumpc1's method then. There are many techniques but they all have one thing in common - YOU HAVE TO WANT TO QUIT. "

" Marge you should I know better than this I have the #'s on my side for several years. It is plenty rough to stop tobacco use, that is why those co. are assured of business for so long. smokers like you? all smokers are like you addicted to the max. As you know I am a tobacco purist. Another thing they told us the second day of the class, start smoking American spirit. No additives and no ammonia technology. "

" Hey, lumpc, maybe the tobacco companies own the tobacco cessation business too and it's a win-win for them? HA! "
