I just felt the need to tell everyone how much a good therapist can help. I didn't believe it, really, and went as a last resort when I knew I would not allow myself to live any longer if I didn't do something drastic. How I wish I had done it long ago.
Really, if you haven't tried counseling before, think about it. Posted on 05/09/08, 09:05 am |

my therapist is always 'there,' and i know how very fortunate i am. it seems many are now moving toward alternate support systems in times of crisis, i.e. hotlines. i understand that no one can be availale 24/7 and some patients take advantage of a therapist's time, unless the therapist sets and maintains firm boundaries but that's another issue. but he seems to understand, i think he's been depressed so he has a personal grasp of that. he doesn't seem to have suffered dissociation but i don't think it's necessary to have experienced it to threat it - if i did i'd not be taking training to be a certified addictions counselor. but you're right, for any issue having a good therapist can be life saving and affirming. and if you find a bad fit you can always find someone else.

I am in the process of moving and finding a new therapist. My current therapist has been a lifesaver. I have worked with him for 4 years and it will be tough leaving him. So far after interviewing 5 therapists, none of them is the right fit. But something will work out, I know. I am glad you found someone you can work with...as you said, it does make a difference!

To me, therapists are like car mechanics....a lot of them out there, that don't really know what they're doing, or only capable of doing relatively simple repairs.
However, once you find a good one that knows his stuff, you don't ever let him go. They can be a godsend, or they can also ruin your life if they dont know what they're doing. But even if you get a good one, if you're not open to taking an honest look inside yourself, even the best will do you no good.
