My pediatrician said it was normal for them to be around the genitals, buttocks and inner thighs because the scratch there often. Also, it's of some interest to them at this age. My daughters started on her torso but have spread to her genital area and a few on her back. Have you considered MolluscuDerm? There is an article about it through this website that it was launched as a treatment at the American Dermatology Meeting in Wash. DC. I'm considering ordering some after reading more about it. Our Dr. told us short of burning them off, we can't get rid of them. He also said it's okay for her to go swimming. She's been in swimming lessons for several months now. I have read many times to keep them out of the swimming pool. I also want to find the truth.

Though I can't comment on how your child might've contracted molluscom, I can say from first hand experience that it's a pretty harmless infection that should resolve itself over time without any scarring. That time varies from one person to the next, but in my case it took roughly three months to disappear completely. I might add that I took a month's worth of Aldara (3 applications per week for 4 weeks) to reduce the number of bumps until there were only a few left. The remaining ones were a bit stubborn but then eventually went away as well. Just remind your daughter not to scratch or rub around the area. That might be easier said than done, but it's important not to spread the infection.

this is a numbing cream that you use to numb the area of the mulloscum. It is prescription. If the doctor will not give you lidocaine, try orajel to numb the skin you have to coat it on and put tegaderm on top of it for about 2 hours for it to numb completely. I then popped the mulloscum that looked like pimples,(with my finger nails, I guess tweezers would work) pulled out the seed and cleaned well with alcohol to prevent spreading. They are almost all gone. You can pop them too without them being numb but it seemed to be very painful. I was told to keep them out of the swimming pools only because it spreads in pools. It is a viral infection of the skin and until they get popped the immune system does not know it is there because it is topical. When it is scratched open unknowingly without being cleaned it will spread. I found a lot of my information on www.webmd.com and one of my friends sons has it too.
