Hi,
I was just reading about Rocco Baldelli, an baseball player who was diagnosed with a mitochondrial disorder. How does one even get diagnosed? Are there specific tests a doctor can perform or signs that a doctor looks for? Sounds like there are a whole bunch of mitochondrial disorders. Which is the most common? Just curious, Thanks Posted on 07/18/08, 07:07 pm |

There is no specific test that is 100% proof you have a mito disorder. Many are diagnosed by clinical symptoms, negative test results and family history. That is how I was diagnosed. Some have a muscle biopsy. This is not 100% accurate though. I had a DNA blood test. It was negative. That also does not mean I don't have a mito disorder.
Don't know what is the most common since there are so many. I was diagnosed with MELAS. Signs are a person with multiple organ systems affected. Hope this helps a bit. go to www.umdf.org for more info.
