My head has been quite achey, and a dr I saw said to use imitrex for any headache. But the Imitrex is really too expensive to use that way. So now I'm in a dilemma, Do I take other pain pills or just live with the headache I do have and save the painkillers and Imitrex for just when I'm in really bad pain? Also do you use OTC pain relievers or just stick to the prescriptions?

I use Ibuprofen and other NSAIDs to fight the inflammation that boosts the neuralgia pain. Other than that, I stick with the prescriptions.
No matter what you use - whether OTC or pain pills, you need to watch how often you are taking it. If you need to push things more than two or three times a week, then alternate meds with acetaminophen for meds with ibuprofen (or other NSAIDs). And keep a watch out on how much acetaminophen you are taking - because it is in a lot of products, and can be quite harmful to your liver when you overdo it. Take care, Laura

Yep, Kaz...4000mg is the max per 24 hours.
But if you are taking it daily, doctors advise keeping it under 3000mg. And taking over 2,500mg all at one time is enough to endanger some folks' livers.

I take Aleve daily just to keep myself functioning. If it gets real bad and I have plans I take my Maxalt. If it gets real bad and I have no plans, I go to bed. If I am no longer able to sleep with no plans, I break down and take a Maxalt.
I only get 6 Maxalt per month, so I only take it when I have to! Other than that I try to suffer thru.

My advice is to try to get samples of Imitrex from the doctor instead of buying it from the pharmacy. Meanwhile, I suggest you do a full-body detox to reduce your inflammation level. The headaches will be smaller and less frequent.
OTC painkillers did nothing really helpful for me. I just got addicted to the caffeine rush, and the crash afterwards would make my headache worse than ever.

After many years of migraines and the constant use of Imetrix, I have found a medication that has works.
Lyrica has relievd my headaches and kept them at bay. I have gone form 5-7 a week to 5-7 a month. I recommend anyone who suffers from migranes to ask their doctor to see if this medication works for them. I had tried trigger point injections, botox and many medications to "help prevent them". But this is the ONLY medication that has helped prevent the headaches, rather than treat them when they occur. I hope this helps you as much as it has helped me. I have my life back!!!!!

I have to take Rx pain meds and Frovatriptan for my migraines.. nothing OTC works for me. Aleeve works for stress headaches and such, but not migraines. I tried Imitrex injections, they don't work and I have tried Topomax for preventative.. too many horrible side effects.
I will just continue to take what I have since they work wonders for me. ~bella
