I have an unfortunate combination of a long history of migraine in the very same nerve where I've had three attacks of shingles. The worst of it started April 2006, but since December 15, 2007, I've had 24/7 a chronic migraine, post herpetic neuralgia (post shingles pain), and allodynia (excruciating nerve sensitivity)--all on the left side of my head. Although I've tried LOTS of treatments and currently see a great neurologist, nothing has worked to break the pain cycle. If I could just get rid of the allodynia, I think I could handle the rest a lot better.
Any insights or success stories? Posted on 08/30/08, 01:08 pm |

I don't have PHN, but I have occipital neuralgia along with the chronic migraines (and do get allodynia with them).
What have you tried so far in anti-epileptic meds? Have you had nerve blocks? Has your doctor talked to you about trying the Medtronic implant? You could also talk to him about using intranasal lidocaine. And, not many doctors talk about this, but you might want to see if ketamine, even in gel form, might be an option for you. Take care, Laura
