" I HAVE BEEN ON DEPAKOTE FOR ABOUT 2 YEARS. IT NEEDS TO BE MONITORED THROUGH BLOOD TESTS. I FEEL IT "START WORKING" IN MY HEAD. IT IS SUPPOSED TO DULL OR TRICK SOME OF YOUR NEURONS, I THINK. IT TAKES A MONTH OR SO TO REALLY SEE RESULTS. I ALSO TAKE OTHER MEDS. "

" Dilantin and Depakote are both anti-epileptic medications, as is Topamax.

All three can have the side effect of slowing your wits, making you clumsy and confused. For some people, if they stick out the first few weeks and let their bodies adjust...their body becomes acclimated to the medicine and they don't feel so slow. "

" Yes, your body needs a bit of time too adjust to this drug. I was on for years in the past, and yes your blood needs to be checked about twice a year. Feeling a bit lost and clumsy is dose related. If that is a major issue talk with your Dr. about it. All the best. P. "

" I take Depakote ER, but for sizcho-affective not for migriane prevention. In fact it does nothing to prevent my headaches, although it did in the past.

I also have to take Ritalin to combat the sleepyness cuased by the Depakote.

You are not alone. "

" I was prescribed Dilantin about 1981 for newly diagnosed petit mal epilepsy: sides were minimal - no weight gain, etc. but after 2 years my gums swelled-my Dr. just said be careful of oral hygiene, rinse with anti-bacterials, etc. When I had to go to the Dentist, he was shocked - told me to get off it immediately, as I was developing Dilantin Aplasia, which can cause serious dental problems. It did, even though I stopped immediately. I've had abcesses, gum weakness, & so much trouble that I had all uppers removed, - and just lost remaining lowers in Nov'7. Please pass the word around, as few people, including medics, seems to know about this. JaneD. "
