New here - anyone had Prednisone before?

Hi all!

I just joined (on the recommendation of my hubbie). He's in the Bipolar group (great - I know!) Anyhow - I just had a question for y'all. I'm just coming off a 5 day migraine and my neurologist has put me on a five day course of Prednisone 60 mg to help break the cycle.

I had 2 concerns: First - I've never heard of this, so I'm concerned about the side effects (I've heard a lot of bad things about Prednisone) and Second, it seems like 60 mg is a really high dose, especially for someone my size (I'm just under 100 lbs). My hubbie's been on Prednisone before for ulcerative colitis at 40 mg and he always had to taper off very slowly.

Any input/advice/experience would be greatly appreciated! Looking forward to getting to know y'all!

" In my experience and from speaking to other migraine sufferers 60mg does seem to be rather on the high side.

Myself and a fellow local friend of mine (whom has migraines) have gone through repeated occasions of Prednisone taper treatments (taking the pills at home for a series of days, slowly weaning down) and received the treatment at our ER visits via Injection for migraines.

I'm often given 10mg pills, but I take a lot of them maybe 5 of them the first day, then 4 the next day, then 3, then 2, then one... you get the idea.
But they are taken 2 or 3 times through out the day, not all at once.

If you are unsure, then ask your doctor why they are taking this approach.

I have not had any negative effects from Prednisone personally.
Sometimes, it's the only thing which will stop those long drawn out migraines (it takes about 2-3 days to make it stop, but it does stop it). "

" As enjeru said, 60mg is quite common when you are starting off a steroid taper.

As for side effects - you may develop an insane sweet tooth and have insomnia. "

" Thanks for the info. I had just never heard of using Prednisone before and I'd only heard really negative side effects about it before. I'm afraid I don't need much help in the way of developing a sweet tooth. As for the insomnia - well, after a week long migraine, I could use a little energy, so maybe this will help. Thanks again!!! " I have only done the taper myself. - It never effected me either way. It didn't solve any problems, but I also didn't have any side effects either. Good luck:) "

" I tried this taper treatment at least three times in the past. I don't remember it helping or making things worse, and I don't think I had any side effects. "

" I've taken prednisone plenty for MS but never for migraines. Prednisone is a steroid and has a number of side effects. I'm 52 and have osteoporosis from the steroids. Prednisone is a powerful anti-inflammatory but I don't know if that's what it does with migraines. Be very careful and don't take it if it's not an absolute remedy and absolutely necessary.

" Recently, doctors feel that steroids such as Prednisone can help to aggressively reduce the swelling in your head, which as they think helps to alleviate the migraine.

Makes sense to me, and I haven't yet run into a person receiving Prednisone for migraines with any ill effects.

I was worried at first too... I had heard so many negative things about steroids in general, I was very leery about them.
But now I'm very comfortable.

Did you ever end up starting them? "

" I did actually do the five day, although I only started out at 40 mg for two days, then 30, 20, 10 and none. It did help, although I think I cried for two days straight once I quit taking it. I hope I don't have to take it again, but it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. "
