I was told last week that I have MRSA after having 2 stys in my left eye and then a boil inside my left nostril. My family has had MRSA and my mother nearly did not come back out of the hospital at one point last year that scared the daylights and also threw me into a depression becasue I had no control and no way of helping her. This may have come from my Peace Corps Service as all of my family came to visit me there and I did have staph infection. Whether it was MRSA or not I am not sure. Whether I got it from my family or they got it from me I dont know. Well now I have it. I have taken extreme measures to endure that I can at least get rid of my infection if not stop carrying MRSA on my body. I have pretty much quarantined my house, completey sanitize everything every day, have lessened my social activities, stoped smoking and drinking alcohol and caffine. I am doing this in part because I know this is a serious issue and I am not wiling to give it to anyone else. I will also do anything I can to get rid of it.
I may be a bit extreme but I am getting no help from my doctor. He put me on Phisohex which is basically Hibiclens to wash with and no real direction other than keep good hygeine. Whn the doctors office called to let me know they did not even tell me it was MRSA. They said your swab cam back positive for staph and I had to ask her what kind. I found this to be inappropriate. They did not schedule me a follow up visit but just called in my perscription to the pharmacy. At this point I was in a panic, I have no answers no ways of dealing with this, was given no steps to prevent others from getting this or to heal myslef so I have taken matters into my own hands. I made an immediate appointment to see my doctor where he told me he didnt know anything and that I was taking it too seriously. The next week I got another boil inside my nose and another swolen eyelid. I called his office and there was no response for two days. So I wrote a letter explaining the lifestly changes Ihad made and included about 36 questions that I still have not had answered and told him how desperate I was for help and that I had become severly depressed and wanted him to help me understand what was going on and how to fix it. That day his office called and said they would make me an appointment with someone who could help me. That office called and booked me an appointment for that day. I went in thinking it was an infectious disease doctor and lo and behold Ihad been sent in for a psych eval that I had to pay $200 for. She also told me I was paranoid and that MRSA was not a bid deal. She then talked about treatment for me and instead of locking me up in the loony bin she decided to give me anti anxiety medicine so I wouldnt worry so much about the MRSA. SO now I am a zombie and Ive found that when you questions doctors when you cry out for help, you are concidered neurotic, an annoyance, unstable and having a break with reality. I have a terrible fear of this yes but I feel that this fear is warrented and I need to be taken seriously I need to have my quesions answered. I need to have a plan to better health and I don't want this anymore. Has anyone else had this kind of problem? Posted on 01/06/08, 12:01 pm |

I think you should see a good infectious disease doctor. the more you are educated about MRSA the less you will be afraid. Stay on your antibiotics. good handwashing is essential. The best thing you can do for yourself right now is to make an appt with an ID. your primary care doc does not sound like he understands much about MRSA

oh my lord Mo, I would be furious! MRSA is so serious at the hospital I worked in people were put on isolation precautions. we didn't enter the room with out being gowned and masked up. Now the drs are trying to play down community accuired mrsa. I don't understand why they are playing this infection down but, I am scared it will be the new HIV were they play it down instead of educating people and it is going to spread like wildfire. you should go to an infectious disease dr and then send a letter to your last dr firing him and maybe reporting him to the local media....that was truly a horrible way to treat a concerned patient. Good luck, pam

They play it down alot, along with the after effects.I had the HAMRSA and now suffer almost constantly. When I feel my best, it is like haveing the flu constantly.Dos need to get more educated as well. But I agree with Lelajane you need an ifectious disease doc to get you though right now. Then keep a diary and really get educated on MRSA.Pick up lots of Purell, and look into things like Hibiclens and newer cleaners you can get online to kill MRSA in the home.Good luck, hugs and prayers.

I think your doctor needs to have a talk with YOUR lawyer! You need a knowledgable doctor. You should check out the CDC website. Try to get a prescription for MUPIROCIN 2% ointment, which is to decolonize your sinuses. Bath with Hibaclens everyother day, but READ the directions! it's avail at most good pharmacies. Buy hand sanitized in LARGE dispensers! and use all the time, wherever you go and touch things!

My doctor didn't handle my infection very well either. The first infection I got, the doctor told me it was staph, but not what kind. He finally had to concede to MRSA after my dermatologist called him to have me put in the hospital. An infectious disease doctor was called in and I received intravenous treatments twice a day to get rid of it. But, I had 3 more bouts of it. I've now changed doctors so it won't happen again.

I actually now have been tested for MRSA and have not been found to have an active culture in my nose and have had no more symptoms. Well I did have an unexplained lump and pain in my armpit and pain radiating down my arms however I did get this checked out and came back negative for MRSA and don't know what it is.
I achieved this I believe by my absolute neurotic behavior following my diagnosis with staph. I washed everything every day. Bathed the dog and cat in hebiclens, ate well, excercised ecxessively, was perscribled about 6 weeks of doxcycilin, washed my hands constantly, bathed in hebiclens everyday, cleaned every inch of my workspace and home with disenfectant wipes, quit drinking and smoking. I also never spoke to my doctor again. Some people just don't understand what it is like to be told that you have a disease that can kill not only yourself but anyone who remotely comes in contact with you. But I decided to get it out of me. It was that choice I believe that has made me well. Now I just need to deal with the fact that my family has reoccuring outbreaks. I don't know if I should be around them and take the chance of getting sick again. Thank you all for all of your support.

Sounds like you did all the right things. My doctor told me to use a powdered chlorine bleach on my towels, linens, and clothes while I had MRSA and for 2 weeks after it went away.

I can understand your worry. I also had a list of questions when I first got diagnosed. I didn't get very good answers either; and many "it's no big deal". I have been fighting my infections since 2005. I have continued to research and contact whoever can help me. I made initial contact with the CDC in 2005, and to my dismay , found that their literature regarding MRSA and other antibiotic resistant bugs was greatly lacking. I have had good advise from the MRSA Resources Forum...lots of good info. I am proud of you Moshoe for taking such an active step for better health by not smoking/drinking and eating better. Those are good things for you. Bactroban (mupirocin) ointment in the nose two times a day for 5 days a month is used for decolonization of MRSA. One of the problems though, is that MRSA is becoming resistant now to the bactroban too. Keep up the good work, and keep us posted.

When I got MRSA it seemed nobody knew anything about it. I contacted my state health department and they weren't keeping records of the outbreaks. I contacted a TV station to do a story on it and they wouldn't touch it. I told them I'd open my medical records and give my doctors permission to talk about my case, but the station said no! I wanted people to hear about it. But then, all of a sudden, about a year ago the media got hold of it and it's now, "THE SUPER BUG". We've suffered and lived in fear longer than that.
