Yes I have heard of staying on antibiotics for life. but ask the reasoning behind it. Maybe that can help you some. Not sure of the situation so don't want to comment on something i'm not sure of.

My doctor told me the same thing today - a "suppression dosage" of doxycycline and I would have to have labs drawn each month to check my blood. What are the side effects of this?

The doxycycline would be a suppression dosage due to having a very difficult MRSA infection. She (like wyleeboy below) will also have monthly blood draws.

I can't give advice as to long-term side-effect in re to the doxycline. (We haven't gotten past the Vancomycin stage as of this posting.) It's a very good question to ask her (and your) Infectious Disease doctor. I'll report back should I have any updates.

I've never heard of being on an antibiotic for life. I had 4 bouts with MRSA about 2 years ago. They weren't as severe as some of you have had and I don't take anything for prevention. Isn't the overuse of antibiotics one of the reasons MRSA and other bad "bugs" are around?

I was on doxy for 2 months and have no reoccurence since early last year. My dr said that they can put you on a low dose of doxy for maintence to hopefully keep the mrsa from reocuring. They do if acne and its kinda of the same thing. I wouldn't think they would need to be on it the rest of their lives unless they are no it for a while and it comes back.
