Two years ago, my dad was suffering from shortness of breath and a severe pain in his rib cage. The doc checked for pneumonia, broken ribs (which he did have), but totally missed the mesothelioma. It wasn't until late August when a biopsy revealed mesothelioma. He died less than two months afterward.
Most primary care physicians will never see a case of mesothelioma. If your loved one has been exposed to asbestos, be persistent with the doctor. I really don't think my dad could have been saved, but his misery could have been mitigated had the correct diagnosis would have been made earlier. Posted on 04/07/07, 01:04 pm |

I'm so sorry for your loss. My dad only lived a year after his diagnosis. The only way they discovered his was b/c of a collapsed lung.

My Dad passed away six weeks after being diagnosed. I just watched my deteriorate before my eyes. Dad too was only found to have this cancer when he went to hospital and had his left lung drained of fluid and the fluid was tested and subsequent scans taken.
This cancer will apparently peak in Australia in around 2015 - 2020. I am fearful for my husband because as a builder he has been exposed to asbestos too during his working life. As yet, he does not have any evident symptoms. I am sorry too for the loss of your Dads. It is such a terrible disease. Tahnee

So soon. Make sure your husband tells the family doc about his risk. They should watch him closely...especially if it will be peaking soon. They say it takes years to develop but when it hits....it is vicious and quick.

My grandad died from it in 2006, he was diagnosed with it in 2003. Over the christmas of 2005 he deteriorated and was no longer able to do anything for himself, my grandma couldn't cope on her own so Marie Cure sent round the clock nurses to their home to help care for him. He died in March 2006 when I was only 12.
It was heartbreaking watching him deteriorate so quickly

The epidemic hasn't even started yet. How many people inhaled the toxic cloud created by 9/11? Millions of tons of asbestos was aerosolized and inhaled by everyone who resided in NYC. The Ground Zero workers are being hit the hardest with excessive inhalation and prolonged, close contact. The rest, millions people, are just walking, talking time bombs.
Add that to the fact that all the manufacturers are now emerging from their bankrupcy status and have already absolved themselves of any future liability. The future victims will be on their own. Unless WE bring this issue to our elected official, news media, etc. The future victims will really feel the pain unless we dedicate ourselves to research.....
